Book Description

Apple has made it easy to get started developing for iOS out of the box. To access the true power of iOS, however, you need to go beyond these simple tools and APIs. Experienced app developer Shawn Welch teaches you how to tap into the true potential of iOS by incorporating some of the most powerful technologies it has to offer.

Using Core Data and iCloud, you'll learn how to store information locally and sync seamlessly across multiple devices and platforms. Leverage iOS 5's new Twitter APIs, which provide painless Twitter and OAuth support using the new Accounts framework. Use Location Services to incorporate new iOS 5 features, such as reverse geolocation lookup and region notifications. Incorporate rich media into  your apps using Graphics, Animation, Audio, Video, and post-processing photo filters and analysis through Core Image. Finally, explore Newsstand, which lets you create your own periodical content and push new content to devices, even when the app is not running.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great guide for iOS developers and beginners February 12, 2012
Format:Paperback
If you are looking to get started with iOS development and have a basic understanding of how the frameworks operate, this is the book for you. The author offers all the example projects in this book for download on his website and it makes following along with the book very easy to understand, he is very thorough in explaining how each process works, as well this book provides great screenshots to help you when you are reading along and in Xcode at the same time. Jumping from iOS 4 to iOS 5 brought a lot of changes not only with the actual OS on the phone but also for developing applications running iOS 5, with the new features in iOS 5 such as iCloud this book does a great job of explaining how to implement them in your application. This book is up to date, most of the other books on Amazon are dated and do not offer the updated info for Xcode 4.2.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very well written and excellent book! April 11, 2012
Format:Paperback
I can positively say that this is a very well written book. I purchased this book after previewing chapter on iCloud and was fascinated with the way the concept was explained and structured. I have bought several Objective C & IOS development guides trying to get an understanding of development on the iPhone. None of the books would guide you properly and did not contain useful exercises and examples.
I definitely recommend this book to any developer who wants to start building iOS applications and doesn't have any previous experience with Objective C and/or Cocoa. The book slowly builds on programming principles and Cocoa patterns, never assuming that you should know this or that. While knowing a bit of Objective C definitely helps, the author explain each concept good enough to allow you to progress with the book without wondering what in the world have you just wrote.
I highly recommend this book as a foundation laying book for beginning app development and will be looking forward for any iOS books written by Shawn!

Good work!

iOS 5 Core Framework Develop and design is the missing manual for iOS development. It's a great read and put together the way we develop. The examples are complete and poignant. Its an easy read, and I find myself going back to it as a reference. If you're new to iOS Development or an old hand at it, there's something in this manual for you. I purchased the eBook, but am going back to buy the printed version... Its hard to dog ear a eBook... :-) I highly recommend this book, and will look for more from Mr. Welch...

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book, Simplification of Complex Topics February 25, 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Mr. Welch's book, iOS Core Frameworks, could not have come at a better time. While other approaches give a long, drawn-out education to these newly available features for programmers (and that approach can be valuable), this book provides a simpler explanation and example of how to implement these features within your projects. The sample code was quickly provided by the author upon request.

For me, this book provided more clarify to implement Core Data and iCloud with two of my current projects.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good book July 8, 2013
Format:Paperback
Very usefull information about the core frameworks. I really like this book because it is well written with easily understandable examples. You can download all the source code from the authors website. Helped me a lot in understanding Core Image and how to apply and render CIFilters in a CiContext. I hope the author will release a new book about the new frameworks in IOS 6 and IOS 7 and all the updates...

4.0 out of 5 stars Useful Overview April 28, 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
As a new-to-apple iPhone app developer, but an experienced C++ programmer, I knew that learning the apple libraries would be critical. This book gives you an overview of the different iOS frameworks. For each one, it covers their purpose, their key classes and how they interact with each other and the calling code, and some sample code showing use. For Core Data and Core Graphics/Image/Animation, I have already gotten my money's worth from the book. The Apple class documentation provides great class-level detail, but doesn't always stitch things together so that you can see the bigger picture - this book fills that gap quite well. The sample code is fairly lightweight, and I had to work in places to understand the context (thus the one star ding) - though I understand the author's desire to not have half the book dedicated to source code. I'll grant that the snippets integrate well into the text and demonstrate the particular concept under discussion - but I wish there was just a titch more context around said snippets.

Bottom line: if you're new to iOS development and need to come up to speed quickly on the frameworks and what they can do for you, this is a good investment of money & time.
