Book Description

November 30, 2011 1449316166 978-1449316167 Third Edition

With iOS 5, Apple added more than 200 new features to the iPad 2, but there’s still no printed guide to using all its amazing capabilities. That’s where this full-color Missing Manual comes in. You’ll learn how to stuff your iPad with media, organize your personal life, wirelessly stream content to and from your tablet, stay connected to friends, and much more.

The important stuff you need to know:

  • Build your media library. Fill your iPad with music, movies, TV shows, eBooks, eMagazines, photos, and more.
  • Go wireless. Sync content between your computer and iPad—no wires needed.
  • Get online. Connect through WiFi or Wi-Fi + 3G, and surf the Web using the iPad’s new tabbed browser.
  • Consolidate email. Read and send messages from any of your email accounts.
  • Get social. Use built-in apps like iMessage, Twitter, and Ping to stay in touch.
  • Store stuff in iCloud. Stash your content online for free, and sync up all your devices automatically.
  • Interact with your iPad. Learn new finger moves and undocumented tips, tricks, and shortcuts.

More About the Author

After studying drama by day and working for the campus newspaper by night when I was at Indiana University, I moved to to New York on the Greyhound bus when I was 22, figuring I'd crash the theater and get a job right off as a prop tart making stuff for Broadway musicals. That didn't exactly work out, but I took a sideways bounce into the world of publishing. I've worked around the city at several magazines and now I write the weekly computer Q&A column for The New York Times.

I did make it to Broadway, though -- just hailed a cab there last night.

This book, just updated for the new iOS 5, is a huge help for a new iPad owner. I'm new to Apple, period, so using the iPad was not as intuitive as it would perhaps be for someone who has owned another Apple product. I had already downloaded and tried plodding through the official Apple version of the user manual, but that manual is so poorly organized and written a bit too technically, that I was feeling like I would need a printed out version to make sense of it.

I just started this "Missing Manual" today and already, I'm doing keyboard shortcuts, know easier ways to deal with open apps, etc. The manual can be read chapter by chapter in the order written, but I've already jumped around a little bit to find my subjects of interest.

I don't know if this manual would be considered too simplistic for someone who is already familiar with the iPad 1 or Apple products in general. But for a newbie, this is the manual to own. The publisher has a website where you can register your book and check for errors and updates, or else contribute those you find. This means that future editions will be corrected and improved based on reader input too.

I'm hoping that someday most of what's in this manual will be second nature to me. In the meantime, it's a great road map!

iPad 2 January 14, 2012
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I primarily bought the book for my wife. She has found it much easier to use the iPad after reading some of the book. She is still in the process of reading the rest of the book, but she says it has made a great difference in using the iPad. She has found it very easy to follow. I also have read the book and it has helped me to master some of the finer points of the iPad.

A trusted series March 14, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I have used these books in the past with great success. They are easy to understand and use. I got the Kindle edition because of the price but I really think I would have been happier with a book that I could hold in my hand. I do enjoy reading fiction on my iPad but I find it a bit more difficult to find specific information with the digital format. I'm just old and used to researching with a book I can hold in my hand. Aside from this I really do recommend this series to anyone needing to learn a new system of product.

Delivery and price as advertised. Book is worthwhile reading, as it contains valuable tips you wouldn't know without reading. The Missing Manual appears to be a good series.

I would be lost without this manual. I 'm not very computer savvy so it really helped me to navigate my iPad 2.
