I originally purchased an Apple Smart Case (not the Smart Cover) at the Apple store but didn't like it for a variety of reasons (see my review of the Smart Case). I returned the Smart Case and purchased the Smart Cover instead.

I did find a combination of the Apple Smart Cover with a third-party back cover that I am extremely pleased with and highly recommend. The first part is the SwitchEasy CoverBuddy for IPad Air, which protects the back of the iPad with a very slim, perfectly fitting cover. It feels very good to the touch and leaves the buttons uncovered for easy access and control. To this, I added the Apple Smart Cover which covers the front screen of the iPad very well and, unlike the Apple Smart Case, lays perfectly flat. I am very pleased with these two items, which provide scratch protection front and back in a perfectly matched combination that does not add any substantial weight or thickness to the slim iPad Air.

IF you are looking for full scratch protection coverage, the combination described above is, in my humble opinion, the one to beat. If you are looking for more substantial protection (i.e., for rough handling or drops), you should probably look at other options.

I have an older iPad and protected it with a Smart Cover. When I got an iPad Air I immediately looked up the Smart Cover for Air on Amazon and the reviews almost put me off. Reports of falling off the table, not turning the iPad off etc. you know what I'm talking about if you've read the reviews. I "asked questions" and got all positive answers. I went ahead and bought it and I love it! I like it even more than the original. For the life of me I can't figure out how anyone had the type of problems I saw in reviews. Were they putting it on upside down? Backwards? On the wrong iPad? I actually tried to duplicate the stated "problems" and couldn't.

Have no fear - this is a great cover.

Designed by Apple - what more need I say? Fits beautifully on my iPad Air 2. Hardly adds any bulk to the iPad. Love the magnetic hinge that almost magically adheres to the iPad. Strong enough to stay in place even with a slight nudge applied, but yet easy enough to rip off the iPad should I want to hold the iPad naked. I bought this primarily to add grip to my iPad when carrying it around - the naked iPad is too slippery and was afraid that it'll slip out of my hands one day. Also love it that the cover converts to a stand for easy typing on the iPad. The inside of the cover is made with a felt-like material which doubles as a screen wipe. In fact, I noticed that my iPad screen is now a lot "cleaner" with this cover on. That's because when carrying the iPad around, the cover kinds of gently wipes on the screen, cleaning it.

Overall, a very well-designed, well-balanced product. The only gripe I have is that it's too expensive! Wished it was cheaper, but absolutely no regrets getting it!

They gave the impression that it was the original smart cover sold by Apple Stores....but they were untruthful. Disappointed first with an Amazon seller to do such thing. I will be more wary in future.

This is just not what I expected for the price. The magnets do not hold when on the back, just flops around. It was supposed to fold so you can set it down or hold it on an angle, don't work well. I wasted my money because this really has no value their are other covers and accessories that will be more useful and about half the cost

I bought this as a gift. Once I got it, I was ashamed to give it by itself because it looked so...."nothing". It's a glorified piece of vinyl with two magnets. Came in a package even less impressive. I get it that Apple wants a minimalistic design, but how about a minimalistic price to go with it! Rediculous!

The case is definitely not an apple product, it came out of the package discolored, and the magnets are very weak. The magnets are so weak that it doesn't close flush on the iPad there is a bend in the middle. I recently bought a case for nearly a third of the price of this one and its magnets are significantly stronger. I would not recommend at all.

Works great, stronger hold than previous generations, the covered magnet is more aesthetically pleasing to use. Easy to clean and use. Perfect for minimalists.

Like many others, I had the iPad smart cover for the iPad 2. And, like many others, I agree that the original performed better. With that said, I still like the overall performance of the iPad Air smart cover. I've had no issues with the magnetic strip staying connected to the iPad Air, like others have experienced. Also, if you're going to use the cover to elevate the iPad from a flat-laying position, it seems to work just fine. I can't comment on using it as a stand where the iPad is at about a 75 degree angle. My guess is that with only 3 panels (compared to the 4 panels that the original had), the support may not be there. Again, I just use the cover to elevate the iPad at a slight tilt when watching a movie / playing a game (i.e. on an airplane back-of-the-seat tray). Overall, I feel the performance is almost as good as the iPad smart cover for the iPad 2 for what I use it for. That discrepancy, and the fact that it is a higher-priced original Apple item, warrant it 4 stars rather than 5.

Great cover by Apple but grotesquely over priced, these ought to be $20 or so. I liked the older versions better that had the aluminum hinge instead of the fabric one these have, cheapened it without reducing the price, shame on you Apple. Not sure I'm a fan of the three panel folds instead of the four on the old either.
