This newest offering from the Missing Manual series focuses on the iPod touch (presumably because it has the most features and the most things to know), but sets aside full chapters to talk about each of the other models (shuffle, nano, and classic). These sections cover not only how to control each device, but also some of the unique ways that you might choose to use them. For instance using the classic as a portable hard drive is discussed, as is using the shuffle as a flash drive and using the iPod nano as a personal trainer. If you already own your iPod you may not use or even read the sections for the other iPod models, but if I was in the market for a new iPod I'd probably look here to help me decide which model fit my needs best.

Once you've settled on a section to start on the book reads very well. The layout is nicely set up to direct you to the information you need. Important terms are often bolded and defined so that even the most novice reader can understand what the author is talking about and follow the step-by-step directions. I thought that some of the directions were more well laid out than others. For example, many of the directions are accompanied by pictures some of which are helpful and highlight the buttons you'll need to press. This is nice and makes learning easy, but some of the other pictures are just screenshots that don't really add to the directions that they accompany. If you are a little tech intuitive (and I mean just a tiny tiny bit) or if you read the entire book front to back and pick things up as you go this doesn't prove to be much of an issue, but I might hesitate to ship this one to grandma in hopes of never having to answer a tech question again.

I've been a long time fan of Missing Manual books, because they are typically well written and thorough in their coverage of applications. This manual for the iPod and iTunes is no exception. The authors of the book are very qualified because they have been writing about Apple related software for a number of years, and J.D. Biersdorfer has authored the first 10 editions of this book. So she is very familiar with the major updates and changes to iTunes and related mobile devices.

You probably not read this Missing Manual from cover to cover, but the easy-to-read step-by-step instructions and screenshots images make it a comprehensive reference book for how to use different versions and models of the iPod -- including apps and related accessories.

The book also includes setting up and using iCloud with supported iPod devices. And for those of us who has an iPod Classic, there's even an entire chapter devoted to it. (By the way, I hope Apple never discontinues the iPod Classic because I still use it to backup all my iTunes music, and to listen to songs in my car. The iPhone and iPod touch don't have enough memory space to hold a large iTunes library, so the Classic is still a very useful MP3 player.)

To get the most out of using the iPod, you will want to be very familiar with how to use Apple's iTunes Player. The authors devotes the last six chapters about how to use that application with various models of the iPod. Thus these chapters make the "iPod: the Missing Manual" a very comprehensive book if you want to learn how to get the most out of your mobile device.

As anyone who has a Apple product know, Apple says just " play with it" and you'll k ow how to use it. This will eliminate hours of " playing" and get you to do things you may have never learned on your own. The iPod is amazing, there are so many things you couldn' t get along without if you only knew it would do it. So, buy the book and get going.

I try to avoid Apple products because I really despise the company having done business with them and finding them to be inherently unethical, if not dishonest.

That said, I needed to acquire an iPod Touch for long-term testing purposes.

For my own edification, then, I needed to learn all the important things about the iOS and Apple eco-systems.

This is a good book for that. In fact, it is overkill since it not only details the iPod Touch but very other major iPod in the past as well.

The writing style is crisp and straight-forward and all the key points are covered. Could you find everything in the book somewhere online? Absolutely, but the book eliminates your needing to invest the time and energy into finding the information.

For the modest price, a worthwhile investment, even though you're unlikely to ever use most of the iPod models covered in the book.

Jerry

This is a well written, very informative book that most users will find very useful. I've been a Mac user since the very beginning, bought my first in 1979, and have exclusively owned Macs ever since, including in periods when doing so was painful. I'm not an expert, yet am experienced. I learned a number of new ipod related techniques from this book. What "with David Pogue" means is not clear. I gather he helped with editing. J.D. Biersdorfer writes well, yet it clearly seems she is the author of note with Mr. Pogue's involvement being limited, perhaps on the cover to boost marketing? I enjoy David's writing, hence my veiled complaint. All in all, a useful, very practical book full of insight and technique. Highly recommended.
