Professional e-reader, best in 2008-2009, today no more,

I'm an engineer and I have been using IREX DR 1000 for some months in 2009. I used it for technical articles, reports and books in A4 size PDF formats.Screen is nice. Large enough for A4 documents, which would be barely readable with the other smaller e-readers.PDF can be easily viewed with a good the zoom and pan functions.SD memory is a great PRO, since you have large memories ( I tried up to 8 Mb ) and easily switch between several SD's.Unfortunately is dramatically slow with large PDF, if you open large scanned files you have to wait seconds every time you switch a page. Not a big problem while reading, but a nightmare if you're flipping through a book looking for something.Too bulky for reading novels and battery lasts few hours only.Today I do not use it anymore. Conclusions : - IREX DR 1000 was the only good e-reader for professionals in 2008 and 2009. - I think my next e-reader will be the new Kindle DX , but I am still waiting to see the new Plastic Logic QUE

Expensive but worth it if you need a big display,

My iRex Digital Reader arrived a bit more than a week ago and so far I'm tremendously satisfied with it.
The display is large (10.2" 1024x1280, I believe the largest currently on the market) and crystal clear and the stylus used for pointing, writing and making comments on existing text, makes it easy to interact. I've been reading digital newspapers using the PressReader software and PressDisplay website and even used it to read digital versions of Scientific American, the New Yorker and Wired Magazine. Because of the large display I can read these in the same layout as the original magazine, although the text tends to be a bit smaller than the original print. I use Adobe Acrobat to produce the necessary PDF files if they are not provided by the magazine/journal. The iRex DR displays scientific papers in PDF format without any problems. On the downside the reader have stalled on me a couple of times when I accidentally pressed a couple of buttons at the same time, but the "downtime" seems much less than some earlier comments on other websites have indicated. Perhaps the new software release 1.6 have addressed some of these problems. Also the device was a bit slow when loading graphics intensive content such as Scientic American. Yes the price is hefty, but if you want the really large display and help the environment then this is a great product.

Excellent e-ink product for professionals/academics,
This review is from: iRex Digital Reader 1000S (Electronics)
The screen space is well suited for journal pdf's and textbook size documents. There is no need to reflow documents.
Includes a note taking feature and you can make annotations on documents. Several 3rd party apps available to improve functionality. Battery life is less than desired, yet (with the latest firmware) is more than adequate to take notes at meetings and read documents through much of a day. Linux underpinnings, and an SDK is provided by iREX, so is customizable. Basically: Its an excellent product with some rough edges: leather protecter is quite heavy; battery life of hrs, not days; response to stylus not always immediate.

iRex technology... belongs to the stone age: SLOW, unresponsive, bulky and heavy, enormously overpriced. Does not work well with mobipocket, does not work well with Adobe PDF files... oh, what a waste of money, what a frustrating experience, what an enraging customer service!
If you want to be taken for a ride and be robbed of your money and then dumped ... then by all means buy it. |
