Product Description

iRobot Roomba Model 4220 Vacuum Cleaning Robot effectively cleans both carpets and hard floors. Roomba cleans hard to reach areas like wall-edges and beneath furniture. It automatically avoids stairs and other drop-offs and Roomba even senses dirtier areas and cleans more thoroughly in those spots. At the end of a cleaning cycle or when its battery is running low, Roomba returns to its Home Base to recharge. Roomba comes with 2 virtual walls that keep Roomba cleaning where you want it and out of off-limit areas.

This model is sort of smart so kudos to the guys at MIT.

I did have to replace a battery a few months ago, but Roomba continues to do a great job.

It works on most surfaces and does a good job for every day type vacuuming.

This model is sort of smart so kudos to the guys at MIT. However, there are consequences to contracting out the manufacturing process to a cut rate Chinese firm. I'm waiting for my third replacement unit as I write this. The brush motor burned out in my original 4220 in about 9 months and the 4221 replacement only lasted 2.5 months. I'm now out of warranty and figure I have three months of life left in this $300 purchase.

Really, selling a plastic toy with no possibility of repair is just criminal. Shame on IRobot...shame.

I purchased a Roomba 4220 (Discovery) from iRobot. The company I work for has manufactured components for iRobot's tactical product line, so I was aware of their commitment to quality, and assumed that it would be reflected in their consumer products as well.

The first one I had died 10 minutes into its first use. The brush drive motor self destructed, causing a great grinding noise to come from the machine. It ultimately took 3 weeks for a warranty exchange.

They (technical support) decided that the reason why the replacement robot didn't work - no sound, only travels in backward little jerky movements 90% of the time, won't dock, wont respond to the remote control, drives right down the steps without ever slowing down... is because the battery needs replaced.

The second agent I spoke with (when a new battery failed to resolve any of the issues) told me I needed to clean the sensors.

When that didn't fix it, the third agent told me that if the speaker isn't working, then it doesn't matter if the battery is good or bad, or if it is dirty or not... the entire robot needs replaced. According to the information he had in front of him, the only problem that I had reported was that it wasn't spending as much time cleaning as it used to. I pointed out that I had never claimed that as a problem, I had, in fact, explained exactly the same symptoms to every person I spoke with.

He sent me 2 emails that told me how to prepare it for shipping, but no RMA number. The first email told me to watch for a subsequent email that would have my RMA number. The subsequent email told me to watch for an email that would tell me how to prepare it for shipping.

I've had my Roomba for almost two years. It is the best thing! It is so thorough and picks up things you wouldn't think it could. We have two large Dobermans and they leave hair where they lay. Roomba cleans it up with ease and looks for more. I had to have major back surgery almost a year ago and Roomba really saved me. It kept the house looking pretty darned good until I could do the deep cleaning again by myself. I highly recommend this product to anyone with back problems-it sure helps alot.

I did have to replace a battery a few months ago, but Roomba continues to do a great job.

This thing is great, it sweeps my kitchen and bathroom, and cleans the carpet around the house. I have two kids who are constantly generating crumbs and dirt all over the house, and the roomba sweeps/vacuums them up before they have a chance to be ground into the carpet or get stuck to the kitchen floor. The roomba does not have a powerful vacuum motor, only a small one, so a roomba is not a replacement for a high powered vacuum cleaner. The roomba will prevent you from pulling out the high powered vac every day though, more like once in a great while if you're like me. I run my roomba daily, and end up with a bunch of crumbs, pieces of wrappers, hair, and misc junk each time I empty it, and the filter catches a bundle of carpet lint and dust about half that of what a clothes dryer produces on a normal dry cycle. Beware of things like hair ties, socks, dryer sheets, shoe laces, stray cords, rugs with loose fibers, carpets with loose fibers, as these things can get caught up in the roombas brushes. It is necessary to pick up such items prior to starting your roomba, as these items can cause the roomba to stop mid cycle (it has sensors to protect itself), or in the event of sucking up too many such items, can lead to premature failure of the brush motor. The reliability of roombas is not extremely high, they do fail, especially in very harsh conditions (like mine). I recommend buying a retail package for the 1 year warranty. If you can purchase where extended warranties are offered, that is a good idea as well. You will find this product will save you enough time to pay for itself many times over in the course of a year... and if that isn't enough for you... Remember.. it's just cool.

I wanted so bad to love this product.

I have 2 dogs and hardwood floors (no rugs), and the room I'm trying to keep clean is a great room about 18' x 30'.

I have to run "Rosie" every single day (or vacuum myself) because she can't handle 2 days worth of dog hair. Even then, I have to disassemble and clean her after every single use. The dust bin doesn't get full, but all of her wheels and brushes get clogged with hair. It takes more time and trouble to clean her than to just push the vacuum around myself.
When she gets herself into a corner or under a piece of furniture, she will often run around in circles for 15 minutes because she keeps trying the same maneuver over and over. And she has so much trouble docking herself, trying over and over again, that she often runs down her batteries before succeeding.

I hope iRobot will figure out in future models how to make Roomba "smarter". I would like to see one that "learns" where the furniture is, and as long as you don't rearrange, she will eventually work out a pattern to clean the room based on where she knows the furniture is located. Or at least that when she gets stuck, once she tries one maneuver, she will figure out that that didn't work and try something different.

I wanted Rosie for so long, but I might have to fire her.
