Useful but lacking intelligence, July 27, 2009
This review is from: iRobot Roomba 560 Vacuum Cleaner - Remanufactured (Kitchen)
Let me start out by saying i love this thing and if you have any doubts about the roomba product in general, do yourself a favor and buy one. It is a must have if you have an apartment or studio and don't have the time or the energy to sweep.
The product works as advertised and cleans up everything that a broom would get. Its even better because it can get under some furniture and requires little work on your part. I say little work because there are some things that can really cripple the roomba.
For one thing, the cliff sensor technology does not work. I have to use a virtual wall (included w/o batteries) to stop the roomba from going into my bathroom. The bathroom is set a few inches below the rest of the apartment and without the wall, the roomba would drive over this edge- but will not be able to climb back out.
The other thing that totally cripples the roomba are plastic bags and wires. The roomba will totally choke on plastic bags, and then get those bags caught in its wheels. It will struggle to get out continuously until it runs out of battery life. The roomba will also suck up cables and wires on the floor, like laptop or cell phone charging cables. It will not let these go but it will continue cleaning and driving around like a dog on a leash until it runs out of battery.
Finally, it has a tendency to move things like shoes or clothes on the floor all around the apartment (and under furniture).
In order to use this thing, you need to make sure that the floor is clear of the obstacles mentioned above and that the virtual walls are in place. I have the roomba scheduled to clean everyday shortly after I leave the apartment in the morning. Before I leave, I have to make sure the shoes are in the closet, clothes in laundry, and cables and wires on the table - otherwise I will come home to find the roomba lying dead somewhere on the floor rather than sitting idly on the charging base.
I recommend the product but I believe that iRobot has its work cut out for it to make future roombas even more hassle free and convenient.

Refurbished not a bad deal, March 13, 2011

worked fine, still works fine. I just had to replace the battery after 2 1/2 years. If you bitch about your Roomba going bad early, they'll sell you a brand new one for much less than even a refurbed unit with free freight. Great company
