3.0 out of 5 stars Great aesthetics and feel, not robust or reliable
We have had several now, the manufacturer replaced after the ceramic disk broke....and then the second one broke.
The feel and design is fantastic but has not been robust for us.

2.0 out of 5 stars Looks good..., January 22, 2012

We own an iittala pepper mill, and we agree it looks very nice, and the hammer-head mill mechanism makes it quite usable. However, we are more concerned with the ability to mill pepper relatively fine, not too fine, just not getting large chunks of pepper. At first, this mill did just that, but after a relatively short period of time, it no longer was able to produce the same fine grind. We will continue to investigate to find a longer laster fine-grind pepper mill.

This pepper mill was a gift for our son at his request. We are very fussy about our pepper grinders and this is a ripper.

5.0 out of 5 stars Solid and great looking, October 17, 2011
Beautifull design by the top Italian designer is timeless piece....solid feel with excellent firm griding action...love it. Now we have goten our first papper and salt mills 4 years ago...design of the griding mechanism was different then....it broke recently and after contacting Iitalla both mills where replaced with no question asked. One cannot ask for more from the company which stands behind their products!

5.0 out of 5 stars THE SPICE MUST FLOW!, May 16, 2011

There is no turning back once you get used to freshly ground salt and pepper. Some years ago my wife was perfecting her steak au poivre and for that she needed a good pepper mill. Then I saw sea whole salt crystals at the market and we both enjoyed the briny scent of freshly ground salt.

After going through a couple of electric mills (which either were permanently underpowered or gave up the ghost after only some months) I searched the market for a set of stylish mechanical ones. The Iittala set proved to be a perfect choice.

They were a bit pricey but they are well built, very easy to fill and very ergonomic to use.

RECOMMENDED.

3.0 out of 5 stars Bottle opener has sharp design, oddly lightweight, not sure it'll hold up., April 18, 2011
Great design, but it's so lightweight you'd think it was hollow or made of aluminum, so I wonder how well it will hold up. I was thinking of buying a napkin holder for the middle of my kitchen table and using this as a weight, and still might, though it's lack of heft in your hand detracts from it's style.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful - functional - classic - tough, December 7, 2010
The iittala Collective Serving Spoon is a favorite of mine. It's perfect in the kitchen or at the dining table. It functions well as a ladle, scoop, stirring spoon, formal serving spoon or tasting spoon. It fits beautifully in the hand and is easy to control. Great ergonomics. I use it more than any other implement in my kitchen when cooking and serving. This is the type of tool that one wants to use forever, and then pass down to the next generation. It's well balanced and the shape is strikingly beautiful. I'm so happy with mine and it was well worth the price. I've had mine for more than six year. Some design objects are more about form than function. This is tool excels in both function and form. I'd get another just in case, but this thing is built so well I can't imagine ever needing another. Unless you try to use it as a pry-bar or run over it with a tank, it should be good for a lifetime. When was the last time you found a tool that would last a lifetime and was something that you wanted to keep forever. I never thought I'd be so enthusiastic about a kitchen spoon. Oh yeah and did I mention how incredibly beautiful this is? I can see it being dug up in an archeological dig hundreds of years from now, and placed in a museum as an indictor or the quality of art and design in our primitive age. This is a classic - timeless design realized in gorgeous stainless steel.

5.0 out of 5 stars Iittala Pepper mill, September 22, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
The pepper mill is perfect. Easy to turn handle coupled to a really smooth turning grinding mechanism. It's easy to fill...just pull up on the handle and pour in the pepper. I have arthritis in my hands and my old pepper mill was hard to hold onto and turn. The handle on this pepper mill is easy to grasp and turn.

The design of the pepper mill is really sleek and modern...so it looks much cooler than anybody elses pepper mill. When was the last time somebody noticed your pepper mill? Well, people comment on mine...and consistantly say how cool it looks.

I loved it so much, I also got the salt mill to match it. They are worth the few extra bucks considering you'll have them for decades.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great pepper mill, July 24, 2010

A fantastic blend of form and function. Looks great, grinds well, and holds a nice supply of peppercorns. The one design caveat is that the plastic top should have been more securely attached to the base. This is how you fill it so an unsuspecting guest might be able to pop it off during a particularly enthusiastic session of pepper grinding. Hasn't happened yet, but I can see the possibility. Otherwise, perfection.
