Book Description

June 1, 2005
How would you feel if you thought God wrote a personal note to you…on His website…and it was about some of the stuff that makes you wonder if He really exists at all? This book does make you feel…while it makes you think. Maybe God isn’t who we thought He was. Maybe His thoughts aren’t what we have been taught. God’s Blogs contains some insightful, fresh thoughts that help us see more of God’s character, His love, and His grace as He reflects on marriage, death, laughter, dads, and questions like “Why are we here?” and, “What about tsunamis and poverty?” A fascinating read that will make you laugh and cry and search your own thoughts about who He is.

What Might God Say on His Blogsite?

Basically I’m entering into your blogdom because somehow the rumor got started that I was kind of boring. For those of you who bought into that craziness, you should know that I’m the one who created all the stuff you love…all the stuff that makes life exciting.

I invented funny and laughter.

I created adventure and romance…

I laugh a lot.

Story Behind the Book

"Blogging is a huge thing on the Web all over the world. Millions of people are logging on to millions of other people’s journals just to see what they have to say. Some blogs have a larger audience than the New York Times. With blogging being so trendy right now, it occurred to me, What might people do if they thought God was blogging online about what He was seeing or what He thought was important? That being the hook, I wanted to take biblical principles written in a form similar to Eugene Peterson’s The Message and attempt to use what is cultural to say what is timeless. God’s truths about His love and grace and fatherhood, written in a contemporary fashion, might just penetrate the hearts of those who need Him during times of trial, or of those who aren’t even sure He exists." — Lanny Donoho

5.0 out of 5 stars Imaginative and Insightful, February 21, 2006
This review is from: imagine...{Gods's Blogs} Insights from his site (Hardcover)
Everybody has their ideas of what God might want to say to them. These are mine. ~Lanny Donoho

In an age where we may be more likely to read the Bible online than to read a book (easier to find verses online), it seems appropriate that God is now a blogger, except he still put his writing in a book. God's Blogs is a lighthearted read filled with deep truths and Lanny Donoho's poetic interpretations of scriptural insight. Through his writing, God explains Anger, Time, Money, Music, Love, Disasters, Light, Evil, Laughter, Faith, Forgiveness, Poverty, Prayer, Weddings, Death, Snow and a lot more.

The book itself is well designed with a snappy black cover with a pattern reminiscent of computer chips and the red cover theme connects with the red text in places and the red underlining of important points. If you enjoy reading books that have doodles in them, this will completely amuse you. The layout for the book is visually appealing and this book is a complete page turner, it even explains why God has a sense of humor.

God's blogs begins with God explaining that he wrote all these blogs before the word "blog" existed. God was being funny and explaining time and then the next page threw me for a loop.

"All bloggers have their own profile. This is mine."

I felt a bit emotional reading about the things God liked as if I was connecting with a side of God I had never met before. I liked how he described what he loved and then I realized this book would connect with people who may never discover God in any other way. God also leaves his contact info:

"Contact Info.
Just call me...
Out loud,
in your head,
with your heart.
I'll get it."

God's blogs is a beautiful celebration of our creator and you may find yourself laughing, getting a little emotional and maybe even connecting more with God than you did before. When Dolly Parton described this book as "liquid fire" she was right. After all, who would not want a letter from God that sounded like he was personally talking to you?

"I miss hearing the sound
of your voice
telling Me what you're thinking about." ~blogjot

God gives lots of advice and leaves little blogjots. He explains why he doesn't just want to be important on Sunday and writes about the day Jesus walked on the water.

Honestly, this book is completely hilarious at the start and then it gets profound in places. God's Blogs has great warmth in the connections, explanation of complexity and feeling of communing with a higher power who understands your life.

I love the sense of humor and the element of surprise. I mean, anyone who has read the Bible is going to almost die laughing in places. Who knew God was a comedian? The heart of God has also infused this book with love!

5.0 out of 5 stars Light, Deep reading, September 7, 2005
This review is from: imagine...{Gods's Blogs} Insights from his site (Hardcover)
I didn't think it was possible to talk about God (especially from a first-person perspective) in a way that is both funny yet inspiring, light-hearted yet thought-provoking, utterly absurd yet dripping with truth. That is the gift Lanny Donoho bestows upon us with God's Blogs.

This is easily the most approachable Christian book I've ever read... the sum total of the read took place over a very busy Labor Day weekend (in pockets of stolen time made specifically for the purpose). The flood of New Orleans was less than a week old and many across the country were secretly asking "Where's God in all of this?" In reading, I found myself laughing, thinking, and altogether absorbing the enormity that is God and the small part that this disaster is in His story. I felt like I got more in touch with the "Big Picture God, little picture me" concepts and the timing was perfect to soak in this truth.

The genius of the book is in the complete package. Lanny engages us with the premise of what God might be thinking (of course, God is God and thinks everything all the time simultaneously always), but then takes it up a notch by making the serious whimsical that captivates the reader and propels him to turn each subsequent page. Because the book is not merely staid black typeset ink on a white page, but rather black and red type with with drawings and handwriting and appropriate whitespace for emphasis makes for an enjoyable read that's full of little surprises )I believe it is wholly appropriate that God should write in the margins).

The chapters are very short... and this is a good thing. Too many Christian books take a topic and dwell on it over and over and over and I lose interest halfway through because I sense I'm being told the same thing repeatedly... long after I grasp what the author is trying to communicate. Interest turns into boredom as inspiring words turn into a lecture. Every chapter of God's Blogs, on the other hand, focuses on a subject that other books devote hundreds of pages to -- and that's why it works so well. Its purpose is quite simply to be approachable, to give the reader nuggets of information to contemplate instead of giving away a compendium of every possible thought on the subject. More is said with less, and this makes the book that much more influential as I've read all of it and have the desire to read it again, in contrast to the countless Christian books that I've read half of (even those written by the most captivating engaging people I know).

Deeper faith with the Almighty is cultivated through the continuous contemplation of all He encompasses. God's Blogs promotes this multi-facet reflection and thus is a great book for the new-, non-, or lifelong-believer.

5.0 out of 5 stars A most awesome book!, March 2, 2006

This humorous yet deep book is not like any book I have ever read before. Lanny takes God out of the "box" and challenged my thinking in a way that drew me deeper into my relationship with God. I found myself laughing, pondering and coming away with a greater understanding of how God sees me and His world. It is one of those books that you want to keep reading because it is so incredible BUT you don't want to finish it too soon because then the experience will be over. I can't wait for God's Blogs #2!
