ineo (Eagle) I-NAI304N1 NAS, July 10, 2009
This review is from: ineo I-NIA304N1, 3.5-Inch Single Bay NAS, IDE/SATA Hybrid, File server, SAMBA server, FTP server, Blue LED illuminated Panel indicates power and R/W activities, Last Minute Deal, (Hard Drive Capacity up tp 1TB) (Electronics)
Got the (NEW) unit, installed a 500GB IDE drive, went to remove the SATA adaptor (very gently) and one of the wires pulled out of the connector. ok no big deal, I'll splice it together again if the day comes I use a SATA drive in it. Anyway, got the 500GB installed, formatted and was working as it should until I tried to use the cooling fan. Turned on the fan and nothing. turned it on and off several times and noticed the fan barely trying to turn but wasn't. I metered the line to the fan and it was a full 12VDC on high so the unit shipped with a bad fan, now I'm slightly annoyed but luckily I had a spare 70mm fan that fit so replacing it was more efficient than returning it. Now I began copying 460GB of data to the unit and all is well. getting a sustained 3.5-4.5MB/s transfer which is fairly normal for a 10/100 NAS device and now I'm beginning to perk up a bit besides the fact that Vista doesn't play well with it, but it does work and works flawlessly on 2000 & XP. After 12hrs of uninterrupted copying data, I notice the R/W LED is getting dimmer. Now I'm into the 16th hr with 3hrs left and the R/W LED is almost completely out and the POWER LED is beginning to dim. Other than that the unit is working decently but its still not worth returning for the LEDS since I've already replaced the fan and the unit will be located out of sight in my utility room with the rest of my networking equipment. Overall, the unit is cheaply made, but you get what you pay for. I guess its only a matter of time before the NIC or IDE controller fails. We'll see.
EDIT: Nearly 1 year later, this unit is still functioning as it was the day I installed it. The R/W and PWR LEDs are still working but really dim and the unit has been running 24/7. I don't believe the FTP server is very secure. I set it up and used a fairly strong password (I haven't tried to hack it myself, but someone succeeded) and after about a week I noticed constant network activity from it when I wasn't using it. I logged into my router and determined the IP address connected to the FTP server was from somewhere in China! I changed the password and after a few days later there were 3 concurrent connections to it, 2 from China and 1 from Russia! Luckily I don't store personal information on it and I have since disabled the FTP server.
