Product Description

An epic adventure through a land of monsters, traps, and magic.

From legendary designer Steve Jackson, co-founder of Lionhead Studios (with Peter Molyneux), and Fighting Fantasy and Games Workshop (with Ian Livingstone); and inkle, the studio behind the award-winning, App Store featured Frankenstein, Sorcery! is an interactive adventure like never before.

Praise for the iOS edition:

"You should choose to own this adventure" -- Eurogamer

"Inkle's adaptation of Sorcery! takes the genre to a whole new level" -- Kotaku

"This is some of 2013′s best interactive storytelling" -- IGN UK

"Beautifully realised ... this gripping tale has us well and truly hooked" -- Pocket Gamer (Gold Award)

"Incredibly impressed" -- Touch Arcade

"Sometimes I feel like I'm wasting my time writing a review when I should really just be pointing at a game and demanding that people play it. This is one of those times. Steve Jackson's Sorcery! is an absolutely marvellous fantasy storybook adventure. Lushly illustrated and expertly told, it should not be missed by anyone even remotely interested in the genre." -- Gamezebo

"Let’s not mince words here... Sorcery’s unique blend of tabletop-like roleplaying (including an incredible combat system quite unlike anything I’ve seen before), and elaborate branching pathways with custom scripts preserving the feeling of Steve Jackson’s work make me now want to… no, HAVE TO acquire an iOS device" - Just Press Start

The app uses inklewriter technology to tell your journey in real-time, shaping the story around your choices. The text itself changes based on how you play and what you do, and in combat, the action is described on the fly based on how you play.

Featuring original illustrations by John Blanche, new character art by Eddie Sharam (DC Comics), an interactive map by Mike Schley (Wizards of the Coast).

"The Shamutanti Hills" is Part 1 of 4. Part 2, "Kharé: Cityport of Traps", is coming soon to the Kindle Store! (Part 2 will load all of your completed Part 1 games to continue your adventure.)

-UPDATE 01Aug14: Ack, who would have thought this would be a FAOTD one day! Still, if you are looking for a completely different experience in terms of RPG gameplay (or just want a blast from the past with a polished Android interface), definitely check this out! There is a Second Part, SORCERY! 2, out now that incorporates your character from this one (or start a new one) just like the old battle books did. I purchased this for myself back in May, and still play it on occasion, but I haven't bought the newest one yet... perhaps I should wait around and see if that one ever gets a Free App of the Day showcase. Hah!

Actually four parts are planned, Part 1 has been out since March of this year, Part 2 was released in June, and Part 3 & 4 are still in the works. And yes, the remaining two will likely be $5 as well. I wouldn't be surprised if inkle LTD possibly put SORCERY! Part 1 up as a FAOTD candidate to help drum up business for Part 2 as well as raise awareness of this particular "Pick-A-Path" book-based RPG Genre (there are a few active publishers of this particular RPG sub-genre).

This game is fairly clean in terms of Permissions/Code although it does contain Google Analytics.

I had personally bought this game back in May, and I never noticed any additional battery drain beyond what may be expected. The "Prevent Tablet from Sleeping" (aka WakeLock) CAN certainly lead to battery drain if you leave the game running as your tablet will never enter sleep mode on it's own, but for apps/games that involve reading or inherent periods of inactivity, this is generally an expected permission as you wouldn't want the screen to suddenly go blank in the midst of reading a passage.

This is classic role playing game. You have to travel across the territories and you have a map to guide you on your journey. All along the way you have to make decisions as you meet and greet people and decide your play path. The story varies based upon your decisions.

Like many roll playing games you are in a learning process by learning to cast spells and fight along the way of the journey. You move your character on the map like it is a board game. The graphics and artworks in the game are well designed. There is a lot of reading like I mentioned and you are constantly making decisions as you work your way across the map. You acquire food and a spell book that is full of spells and they are added to your collection of travel items. Spells are three letter words that you cast by touching the letters in the sky which are stars.

There are 48 spells in the books so good luck in memorizing them. There is a table in the front of the book that lists the six most useful spells and thank heavens because within the book the spells aren't in any apparent order. Some spells require that you have other items that you own in order to cast and focus the spells.

This looks like a good app and it has been well praised on many forums as being a good RPG. I am not much into this style of game but I can see the hard work and great storytelling capabilities that have gone into creating this book. My only negative is that the spell book is massive and going through it is tedious and slow. To me it would have been better to have the spells separated into categories like offensive spells, defensive spells, power and stamina spells, spells to weaken your opponent and spells to provide you with a temporary advantage like increase your size.

3.0 out of 5 stars Drains my battery like its dumping liquid! May 30, 2014

Love the game so far and want to give it 5 stars, but any time I play this game my battery easily drains 15% every 10 min. In fact, when I plug it in, it still drains faster than it can charge! In order to play it, I have to have a full charge and plug it in so it only drains at 2% every 5 minutes. I have never experienced this amount of drain with any other app that I have ever used and I have tried hundreds!

5.0 out of 5 stars Did not see this coming May 26, 2014

I honestly was not expecting such a detailed DnD game to come out for any tablet, this game has shown me to be wrong and I couldn't be happier, the fighting scenes are smooth and simple to understand, you have numerous ways to deal with situations, how you deal with them determines your characters personality, and I loved it when you find and item that has no apparent use and then figure out whats its used for later. Excellent game and I hope the next chapters are released for all tablets soon.

5.0 out of 5 stars "Sorcery!", A Hidden Gem August 1, 2014

I purchased this game as the FAOTD, not knowing what it was. I had never heard of this game before. I thought that the art looked really cool and I'm into fantasy storytelling, so I figured I would give the game a shot. I'm a huge fan of "choose your own adventure" books. I recently checked out a bunch of the old ones from the 80's from my local library. "Sorcery!" definitely falls into that genre, just in game form.

You start out the game by choosing one of two characters (one is male, one is female). Then, you begin your quest to retrieve the Crown of Kings. The game is set up almost like a board game, with a map that you travel through. You have the option of choosing different paths and reacting differently to the scenarios and characters you come across. You can also enter turn-based battles at different points in the game, where you either engage in combat or use your sorcery. You can buy rations, ingredients for potions, and weapons along your journey. As I've only played through once so far, I'm not sure how different the endings are.

The game is not too long. Maybe an hour or two at the most, depending on the detours and choices you make. I like the option to backtrack to checkpoints if you don't like the route you've chosen. Just so everyone knows, this is essentially the first chapter of a story. The story is not resolved by the end of the game. You will have to purchase "Sorcery! Part 2" to continue. I enjoyed the game, story, and art so much that I just purchased Part 2 immediately after finishing Part 1. It was well worth the $5 to me. The art really stands out. I love the map. It's got a textured look, where the terrain seems 3D at some points (mountains, hills, etc. ). It really is beautiful. There are also beautiful illustrations that accompany the story.
