The internal memory is only 4.5G but it is supposed to be 8G, what's wrong with it?

I wondered about this, and found that the answer is due to disk partitioning. There are several partitions, but the main 2 are /data and /mnt/sdcard (not the external sdcard, which is /mnt/extSdCard), each of which is 4GB. I believe the apps are installed on /data, and the app data is on the other.

I also think that the reason there is an internal partition named /mnt/sdcard is to fool older apps that assumed this was the external card, and that Google didn't want the higher memory devices to use the external card by default; they wanted to use the internal memory more. Most apps allow you to specify where to find data like music, videos, etc, and seem to find the external card with no problem.
