Product Description

InviZimals is an augmented reality game for PlayStation Portable (PSP) that utilizes the included PSP camera to project a gameworld filled with collectable miniature monsters against the background of the everyday reality of players. The result is the revealing of over 100 different kinds of monsters that can be captured, and primed for battle in both campaign and wireless multiplayer modes. Additional features include the ability to use the PSP camera to make movies, take pictures and possibly be used with additional games in the future.

Monsters in Plain View in InviZimals

InviZimals turns your PSP into a device that lets you enter and explore an invisible world of mini monsters living within the augmented reality of the gameworld. This is made possible by way of the PSP camera included with the game. Attaching to the the PSP via the mini USB connection along the upper edge of the handheld, the camera utilizes the real life space and events of the player's everyday world as the backdrop for the events of the game, which are projected over this, and made visible to the player via the PSP screen.

The gameworld of InviZimals is framed by a story revolving around a fictional PSP research and development team, who after stumbling upon a world filled with miniature monsters, invites players to learn the correct techniques for capturing these monsters. Once captured they must be raised, trained and leveled up for use in battles. Battles occur both within the game's single player campaign, as well as through the games wireless multiplayer option that allows players take on friends, both over ad-hoc and infrastructure connections, in head-to-head conflicts. Additional features built into InviZimals include: over 100 types of InviZimals, a range of different overarching in-game power elements to discover, a variety of power-ups and more.

The PSP Camera

In addition to being the conduit through which the InviZimals gameworld comes to life, the PSP camera is also a valuable peripheral in and of itself. The camera is rated at 0.3 megapixels, taking photographs at a maximum resolution of 640x480 and video at up to 480x272 at 30 fps. It has a wide-angle F2.8 lens that swivels to point at the user or away, has standard and macro recording modes and a microphone feature compatible with some software voice recording releases. This makes it perfect for taking pictures, making short movies and perhaps additional game and video uses.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Game, but a few Flaws. November 6, 2010
A Kid's Review
Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
I got this game along with a camera for my PSP recently, and this is a great game. And no, this is nothing like Pokemon. It's actually better. Anyway, it's a great game, but here's a few BAD things about the game:

Ok, so there's this thing called a "trap", used to capture the Invizimals, but sometimes the trap doesn't work so you can't play the game.

It's sometimes hard to find Invizimals considering the fact Invizimals are usually found on bright colored surfaces.

Other than that, the game is great. 5 stars.

4.0 out of 5 stars Got for the camera, but the game is pretty good to. July 20, 2011

Fun: 3.0 out of 5 stars
I bought this with the ambition into turning my PSP into not only a gaming device but a camera on top of being a MP3 player, Picture Viewer and Video playback..uh er?

Anyways the camera isn't as good as my proper sole purpose camera but for the price of $20 + a game it was quite the deal.

Im going to split this review into two, one for the camera and one for the game.

PSP Camera:

Quality - Above Average 7/10 has digital editing features such as sketch and distort etc.., its kinda grainy at times, but when the focus kicks in, it actually looks pretty fair, the imagine quality could be something compared to a cheap camera for a PC, meaning its okay but not the best out there. it is above average though that is for sure.

Design - Slick 9/10 not bulky or ugly at all, Sony did well with this one.

Features - Solid 9/10 it can easily replace your average ordinary digital camera if you have a big enough memory stick, I.E 2,4,6,8,10,12,14, or 16GB, though even 2-4GB should be more then enough space to get some decent photos and videos out of.

Sound (VIDEO MODE ONLY) Good - 7.5/10 Sounds a bit to soft to me, however that can easily be edited later on when transfering over to a PC, Laptop, or PS3. its good, not bad or great, just good.

Extras - Surprisingly Okay 9/10 It has its own menu mode, like Picture, Video and Music Modes with a good amount of editing and tweaking features, it could have used more, but i wasn't expecting some of these added options, i was only expecting basic options at best, these were above basic for sure.

3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting, but... December 3, 2010
Fun: 4.0 out of 5 stars
As someone who was addicted to Pokemon in my early teens, I occasionally feel drawn to monster collection and fighting games like this. Invizimals mixes the classic "catch-em-all" gameplay with the relatively new technology of Augmented Reality (AR) to move the story and battles away from imaginary far off places. Instead, the story takes place in the real world, and the battles are on the table, desk, or floor in front of you.

I've been playing with AR demos for some time, so when this finally came out in the US (almost a year after it released in EU and Japan) I picked it up.

Invizimals is clearly aimed at a much younger audience. The acting is a bit cheesy and the interface is rather simplistic.

Unfortunately the developers didn't think to add subtitles to the videos. My brother is the only other adult I know with a PSP who would be likely to enjoy this game, but he is deaf which prevents him from hearing any of the story and important information on capturing the Invizimals. So a word of warning to deaf gamers and the parents of deaf children, this game is not deaf friendly.

As a hearing person I also would have greatly appreciated subtitles due to the fact that all of the actors have prominent accents and are occasionally difficult to understand.

Invizimals are unlocked for capture by completing the main story. Unfortunately you must also capture one of each unlocked Invizimal in order to continue the story. If you have difficulty capturing an Invizimal for any reason you will be stuck until you are successful.

The battles are presented in real-time rather than being turn based. As long as your Invizimal has enough stamina you can attack or block repeatedly, and so can your opponent, which makes for some interesting changes in strategy.

Overall this game is fun, but it has some limitations that could reduce its lasting appeal.

4.0 out of 5 stars My son couldn't stop playing this! January 10, 2012

Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
As soon as my son got this for Christmas he put the camera on his PSP and started playing. He loved it so much, he wouldn't stop playing! It is really cool how you have to capture the creatures, but sorta silly sounding when you have to "call" for them. I can hear him in the other room calling for them and think he's talking to himself! Sometimes he'll say its stupid some of the things they make you do or how they do it, but then again he won't stop playing it! So, it is great entertainment for my 11 year old!

5.0 out of 5 stars Worth the money November 10, 2010
Fun: 4.0 out of 5 stars
So finally the PSP camera comes to America.....3 years after the promised date but hey it's here and maybe we can get Go!Edit access and Go!Messenger (look these up because I think the US market would eat this up).

Anyway this is a good purchase just for the camera sake. Yes I know it's not a great megapixel camera but it does the job and it is on your PSP. If you are getting this for your child, it's a perfect starter digital camera for the tike. The game shows great potential of what the future may be for Sony and the PSP if Sony decides to seriously develop for the camera.

The game, itself, is a good game but does get stagnant after a while for the adults (I travel so I play games during my hotel time. Recommend to take breaks from the game and play some more mature games in between). What makes it most worthwhile, IMHO, is that my daughters and I have a great time hunting down little creatures around the house. Online battles and trading invizimals is an option that is nice and has voice chat. Parents should be aware of this feature and monitor appropriately.

NOTE: THIS WILL NOT WORK FOR THE PSP GO. The camera attachment will not work for the PSP Go. Do not bother with getting this if you or your child has a PSP Go. If you do not know which PSP version you have, find out prior to buying. This will only work for your stock "k-series" (1000, 2000, 3000).

-Fun family-friendly game sure to get your kids off their chairs.
-Free camera.
-Does not work with PSP Go.
-Adults may get bored with the game after extended extensive play.
