From Publishers Weekly

In this second volume of the Dragonbards Trilogy, Tebriel must use his skills to fight the evil that is conquering his world. Dacia is the only country thathas not succumbed to the mind enslavement perpetrated by the "unliving." They are, however, using Dacia as their headquarters. Why hasn't Dacia fallen? Tebriel must use his wits and courage, as well as his magic, to find the answer, which lies in the ivory lyre. This well-crafted fantasy has a depth and scope reminiscent of Tolkien. Like Bilbo, Tebriel has a small but important part to play in a larger war. The first chapter recaps the important events in Nightpool, the earlier book, so that this volume stands on its own. Ages 12-up.

From School Library Journal

Grade 6-9 Murphy continues the story of the dragonbards' struggle against the dark forces invading the world of Tirror, which she began in Nightpool (Harper, 1985). Prince Tebriel enters the Kingdom of Dacia disguised as a merchant, offering as his wares the four singing dragons who have transformed themselves into war-horses. His purpose is to contact the Resistance army and to search for other bards, including his lost sister, Camery. In this second volume of the trilogy, the plot is more straightforward and focused. The appearance of more human characters adds interest (those in Nightpool were mainly talking animals). In fact, the introduction of some strong female characters threatens to steal attention from Tebriel, the hero of the story. The shadowy personalities of the dark invaders are slightly more developed here. The conventions Murphy uses in creating her fantasy world are not new, but her plot commands attention; the device of turning the dragons into horses is particularly effective. Although clearly part of a series, the story can stand on its own. Ruth S. Vose, San Francisco Public Library

More About the Author

Shirley Rousseau Murphy grew up in southern California, riding and showing the horses her father trained. She attended the San Francisco Art institute. Shortly after graduation, she married and worked as an interior designer while her husband attended USC. "When Pat finished school, I promptly quit my job and began to exhibit paintings and welded metal sculpture in the West Coast juried shows," Murphy explains. Her work could be seen in many traveling shows in the western States and Mexico. She continues, "But when we moved to Panama for a four-year tour, in Pat's position with the U.S. Courts, I put away the paints and welding torches, and began to write."

She has published sixteen children's books, a young adult fantasy quintet, the Dragonbards fantasy trilogy, and The Catswold Portal. "It was while working on this adult fantasy that I knew I wanted to explore further the fascinating world of sentient cats. I began to see the gray tomcat, whom I knew well in real life, as a feline detective with a brash attitude--and the die was cast. I launched into the Joe Grey mystery series. I like discovering anew with each book how the three cats interact with their close-knit world of human friends--Joe Grey in-your-face abrasive, Dulcie of a gentler nature, and Kit wildly imaginative."

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best trilogies ever!, March 14, 2000

This review is from: The ivory lyre (Unbound)
This is a wonderful book. Although the first and third books (Nightpool and Dragonbards)are also excellent, I think this is the best by far. It's about a young dethroned prince (Tebriel) who has discovered he has the power to contact dragons and help free the captive world from the tyrrany of the Unmen. It is a terrific book for young and old alike. I would recommend it to anyone who loves fanasty or a good adventure. I hope that soon this trilogy will be rereleased.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful heroine, even more wonderful dragons!, December 4, 1998

I love the entire Dragonbards trilogy, but this one has to be my favorite volume of the three. I have no idea how many times I've read it - the librarians look at me and say, "You're checking it out again?" My major complaint is that the whole series is out of print - someone, please reprint these so that I can get my own copies and share them with my friends!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great for a child, August 11, 2011

This review is from: The Ivory Lyre (Paperback)
I found myself bored because of the simplty of the book, but then again I am an adult and the books I read cast web after web of detail.

If I was to read this as I child I believe I would find it to be truly enjoyable.
