Always on Vacation,
By John Wraith "Studio Gangsta" (Rural Virginia) - See all my reviews
This review is from: jj no 3 (Audio CD)
This stuff is seared into my brain. I still like No. 2 better, but this album has an ethereal quality to the melodies that really hits the sweet spot and tends to fasten themselves to your immortal soul.
It begins with a piano-and-voice cover of Lil Wayne's chorus from The Game's "My Life." As with the previous record, lyrical themes are seemingly pretty standard club fare but attain a strange sort of depth, mystery, and honesty in the context of the recordings. Standouts are "Into the Light," "Light," "You Know," and "No Escapin' This." While it sometimes seems that JJ aren't aiming for anything above laid-back summer drug music, they have a beguiling, blinding artistic streak to their stuff that becomes more and more obvious every time you hear it. They are somewhat similar to Cut Copy and the Tough Alliance in that regard. But that doesn't mean that it's not also great summer drug music. The paraphrase both the LP's last song and Aerosmith, this album is pure Permanent Vacation.

Love love love this album, and love love love JJ No 2. Love the Swedes, they just seem to have a knack for great pop/dance music. This album comes off a bit slower and different than the flavor of No 2, but after a few listens it's just as good if not better.
Good friend of mine just saw them in SF, wish they'd come to Detroit.

One of the many items that a buy during a year that I know little of nothing about before purchasing it. That helps avert pre-concieved hopes. When I bought it I was thinking it might be jj72 reincarnate. One listen dismissed that thought. While jj72 rocked, jj floats. Their soft electronica with a dollop of jazz is for those times when you want music on while reading or when you're stoned. For that genre it's worthy of purchase but to put it on in the car when heading down the highway - - -nope. Tastes are extremely personal but I'll listen to jj72 long before this ever hits the turntable again.
