5.0 out of 5 stars The father of Bossa Nova plays his greatest hits, December 7, 1999

This CD is a perfect complement of Cult Alf , released last year. Both are recorded alive in a small night club in Rio de Janeiro. Here Johnny Alf ( with acustic trio ) plays and sings the greatest hits that made him a cult artist in early 50's, some years before Antonio Carlos Jobim and Joćo Gilberto made Bossa Nova famous around the world.Songs as Rapaz de bem , O que é amar and Ilusćo a toa are classics today. So is his masterpiece Eu e a brisa . Alf is also important to have made the fusion between samba and be-bop that made possible the modernization of brazilian tradicional music.Unfortunatelly he has recorded very few ( 11 times in 50 years ! ) wich mades this CD a very rare document about his talent as a singer and piano player.

4.0 out of 5 stars A great live showcase of a Bossa Nova master, February 24, 2006
By
This review is from: johnny alf (Audio CD)

Johnny Alf is one of the former Brazilian composers to fuse Jazz into Brazilian music. His strong Jazz accent made him be honored as one of Bossa Nova founders.

He composes and writes his own inspired lyrics. He also plays the piano in all his albums.

This is a live showcase of some of his great standards plus some new material.

4.0 out of 5 stars The same CD with another title, December 13, 2000

It is the same CD also called "Eu e a brisa", already rewied by myself in this site. The only diference is that it does not contains the title song, changed for "Cao Xango", as it was originally released in vynil in 1966. If you want to know more about Johnny Alf, try the Ruy Castros's book "Bossa Nova" wich recently had very good reviews in New York Times.
