3.0 out of 5 stars Great Expectations - not a great cover November 28, 2010
By Tiffany
Verified Purchase
This case is not bad - it's cute to look at and I really wanted to love it. Except I didn't.

The canvas is coated with a plastic material to keep it clean on the outside, but the black and white striped canvas is not protected, so I suspect it will get dirty quickly. I knew it wasn't leather when I bought it but thought it wouldn't matter, but when I got it up close and personal, it really did. It was not nearly the quality I was looking for.

It doesn't fold back flat. While the hinge system is the same as Amazon's, I just didn't feel it was as secure as it could be. I don't like my Kindle flapping around freely. Last, there wasn't a way to keep it closed. Yes, when lying flat it did stay closed but when in a bag it opens easily.

I returned it, the name and cute design just aren't enough for me.

1.0 out of 5 stars Amazon Advised Me To Return December 27, 2010
By Kat

So I received this cover and loved it. I had no problem with the hinges and it was very cute to look at. However, after about 2-3 weeks of using this cover my Kindle would not turn on. I called the support number and they helped me reset my Kindle and it works fine now. However, the support person told me that Amazon thought the covers with hinges were causing problems with Kindles and advised me to return this cover. Although it's cute, I did not want to keep the cover if it meant my Kindle would be damaged, so I returned it. Got a $25 credit from Amazon (in addition to the full price of the cover) and ordered one of the covers without hinges (the New Yorker ones are cute). I haven't had any problems since.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great quality, bad hinges! December 3, 2010
Verified Purchase
I love everything about this cover with the exception of two things. One is not a big deal - I wish the cover had a strap to keep it closed. But it is sturdy enough to stay shut pretty well on its own. The other thing, which is MAJORLY annoying, is that the hinges will not hold the Kindle in straight. I also can't pull them back out now, and so I am worried that I will end up breaking the cover if I need to remove the kindle. Good idea in theory, but having it sit at an angle really bothers me.

Update: Amazon customer service sent me a list of tips on how to use the hinge system more easily and properly so that I can get the Kindle in and out. I must assume it was based on this review, so I have to give a thumbs up for customer service related to this product. It is also worth noting that I get a lot of compliments on my cover and when I traveled with it, it kept everything very secure.

1.0 out of 5 stars Buyer Beware February 23, 2011
By Anna

I had purchased this kindle cover because I loved that it was made by Kate Spade & Charles Dickens is one of my favorite authors. So imagine my surprise when my kindle stopped working, would lose where I was at, and wouldn't charge any longer. After numerous phone calls to Amazon my husband & I learned that Kate Spade pulled these covers off the market! Because they somehow interfere with the kindle, causing it to have the above problems I had! It took many phone calls to get this taken care of & I did get a new kindle & credit. Stuck with the cover still as they won't take it back, they told me it wasn't an Amazon product, only sold on their site. It wasn't a fun ordeal, just glad it's over with & I wanted to warn others in case they are considering this case. Hope it helps!

1.0 out of 5 stars Chic but useless February 13, 2011

Ok, I fell for the design, it really is cute (ok and girlish, which there is not much of out there for Kindle)
Sadly, it deteriorated my kindle, does not protect it (it doesn't even hold it well) and is already
fading (I've only had it for 3 weeks)

1.0 out of 5 stars Nothing but problems January 28, 2011

I purchased this item along with a kindle 3 for a gift and this cover has caused nothing but issues for the recipient. Spoke with Amazon numerous times who blames it on the hinges in the case, however they only ever want to replace it with their own lighted version which is a cheaper case.

After a few phone calls to customer service someone finally realized this and offered to credit the account for the price of the case so a suitable replacement could be ordered. However this credit has never shown up and customer service at Amazon has not attempted to remedy the situation in any way.

Forget about bringing up the courtesy credit that another review mentioned that had the same issue. All customer service will tell you is that you do not qualify, but cannot explain how our situation is different then the similar review posted below.

1.0 out of 5 stars FAULTY HINGES BROKE 2 KINDLES!!!!! February 4, 2011
Verified Purchase
DO NOT buy this cover! After receiving this cover and Latest Generation Kindle for Christmas my Kindle started freezing and losing power after a week. Amazon kindly sent me a NEW Kindle and the same thing happened after a few days! I removed the Kate Spade cover and (after trouble shooting with Amazon Customer Service) my Kindle is back to normal and working fine with no problems. This case is NOT WORTH THE TROUBLE! So cute, but not functional.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very good cover! February 8, 2011
Verified Purchase
I was a little worried about how this purchase would turn out given the issues that have surfaced with regards to Kindles crashing/hanging when they are fitted to similar cases. I'm happy to report that it seems that work has been done to rectify potential issues.

-Will my Kindle crash with this cover?
A while ago, Kindle users started to see their devices crashing when used with the official Amazon non-lighted case. Originally, it was thought that repeated attachment and detachment of the Kindle causes the contacts on the metal hinges to be worn off and the insulation removed. Somehow a short circuit might be introduced and the Kindle would crash. Dave at EEVblog's (Youtube) found that the Kindle could handle such shorts. However, some users have shown that static electricity that is conducted through the exposed hinges may be the culprit of the crashes.

It seems to me that the hinges on the Kate Spade cover do not seem to be metallic, but made of strong plastic which functions just as well, if not better, as the metal hinges found on the official Amazon cases. If I'm right, then the crashing issue won't happen because there'll no possibility of shorts or electrostatic discharge. I'm not sure if this is due to action taken recently to rectify the situation, or if the same material has been used all along. I ordered the case on 29 January. YMMV. If I'm not right and the hinges are made of metal, we'll just see what happens in a few week's time!

-Can I fold the flap totally under the Kindle?
The official Kindle covers have no problem with this. You can fold the whole thing very easily and read with one hand. For the KS, it's more difficult to fold the flap back, but it's certainly possible and I'm no problems with it.
