Let me start off by saying that I am not necessarily a fan of Price. I find his writing style dull and stilted, and his grammar is the most atrocious out of the pulp writers I have read. He does, however, give lots of good information about the 'good old pulp days', for which he is quite remarkable.

A friend gave me his copy of this book, and I have read a selection of the stories. They actually seem to have good plots for the most part, even if they are not too greatly executed. The important thing to remember when reading these stories is to keep an open mind when dealing with dated material--what might seem dull and over-exagerated now was probably exciting in the twenties, thirties, and forties.

One really neat thing about the book is the introduction from the author, retelling what it was like to write for the magazines. If writers thik they have it tough to day in the dog-eat-dog publishing world (and I am a writer, so I would know), then think of having to crank out up to 8,000 or 10,000 words a day to make a decent profit out of the one-to-two cent a word price from the pulp mags, which were the next step after the dime novel.

Another good book to check out is STRANGE GATEWAYS, which came out a few years before this one. I haven't had a chance to get it yet, but I am saving up my money.
