This review is from: The last Japanese soldier: Corporal Yokoi's 28 incredible years in the Guam jungle (Hardcover)
I had lived on Guam in the mid 80's and met the current mayor of the town that overlooked the valley where Yokoi lived. He pointed out where his cave was and some interesting tales surrounding the story. He and his buddies used to go down to the river (which was quite a distance down in the dense jungle) before Yokoi was discovered. I knew a little about the story and enjoyed my time on the island. My girlfriend found an english copy of the book for my birthday (I was very suprised!). Since the story has some personal interest to me, I found it very enlightening.

I read this book over 20 years ago and it still stands out in my mind. Written from an enemy soldiers perspective of the Americans while waiting for his countrymen to re-establish control of the island he was on. There was tremendous loyalty by this soldier for his country.

4.0 out of 5 stars Are you aware of the other Japanese soldier -?, September 28, 2007
This review is from: The last Japanese soldier: Corporal Yokoi's 28 incredible years in the Guam jungle (Hardcover)
I have not read this book but I would like to but it is very costly it seems. I have read the other book about the other Japanese soldier whom held out in the Philippines - "NO SURRENDER - my 30 year war". It was great as for the jungle skills, etc. Amazing stuff! Can you tell me if this soldier "made fire with a piece of wire?? Signed, Mtn Mel - colomtnmel@msn.com
