I recently took the GRE and will probably retake it soon (aced the verbal, but need improvement in the quant department). Having relied on other books to review concepts and learn test-taking strategies, I ordered this one for practice. And practice is exactly what you'll get with this massive, five-pound behemoth of a book. As an added bonus, it will seriously help you tone your arms.

The first thing to be clear about is that this is (as advertised) a supplement. It should not be the only GRE prep book you use: think of it as a workbook to go along with your textbook. In other words...

WHAT IT IS

A great mental workout consisting of lots and lots of drills. Once you know the basics, this will really help reinforce what you've learned. There is a range of difficulty, though the difficulty level is not generally marked.

Rather quant-heavy. The quantitative portion takes up about two-thirds of the book, but this makes sense since there is so much ground to cover. You'll find every type of problem that will appear in that section, broken down by category so you can focus on your trouble areas.

WHAT IT'S NOT

A bag o' tricks. This book will not teach you how to "outsmart" the GRE or provide you with shortcuts for solving the problems.

A book of practice tests. However, the back of the book does include timed practice sections: one easy, medium, and difficult section for both quantitative and verbal.

STRENGTHS

Excellent explanations in the answer sections. These were simple, clear, and easy to understand. Answers in the quant section show how to solve the problems step by step, while also reviewing relevant concepts. Verbal explanations were likewise great.

With GRE preperation, the majority of the 'variety' of problems are going to be related to Quantitative. With Verbal, there are a few basic formats of the questions with the 'curve' being how well you deal with logic and vocabulary words.

A misconception with the verbal is that you need to know many vocabulary words; this is not true. It would help however studying vocabulary lists will be wasted time. You can strategically study the 'way' to view the question and answer the problem that will allow you to answer correctly and concentrate on problems where you need to absolutely know the answer--Quant. Take note that I said 'strategically' because GRE preparation should begin with strategies, then to the problems themselves.

The latter is why the 5 lb book of GRE practice problems is a must buy...but as part #2. This book is 80% of the 'ne plus ultra' GRE book that does not exist. The other 20% concerns strategies for the questions. This 5 lb. does not contain strategies specifically; it contains answers for all of the questions which explain how to approach them though this is not the same as teaching general strategies and approaches for the GRE test.

---Digression Alert---

My GRE preparation consisted of taking (1) book and lightly studying over the course of 3 weeks. I studied no verbal and concentrated only on the quantitative. The book I chose to use was: Cracking the New GRE with DVD, 2012 Edition (Graduate School Test Preparation). It is quick, succinct, and made me feel as if I sufficiently re-learned the essential math that was needed for the GRE.

I fully recommend this book. You might not need to complete the entire book, and probably shouldn't unless you're months away from the exam. I fully recommend completing Manhattan Prep's 8-book GRE program before spending time on the problems in this book. Personally, I started scoring around 150/170 for math and about 160/170 for reading when I started. I was able to pull my score up to 162/170 for math and 168/170 for reading comprehension, which I'm pretty happy about. That was the first time I took the exam and I finished half of the 5 lb MGRE book and all of the 8-book program books.

Good luck!

The Manhattan Prep GRE book is actually closer to weighing six pounds, and the publishers even say so at the beginning. You probably wouldn't want to carry it around with you, This book is definitely as good as any GRE prep book around in terms of thoroughness, BUT it has some ERRORS in the answers, which is definitely not good! But if it doesn't bother you that the team at MP wrote that James Joyce was the author of Lady Chatterley's Lover (see page 93), who am I to complain?

However, I completed one section of 20 questions; one answer choice in the sentence completion that was claimed as correct, in fact, could have been answered with an alternative. Interesting that in the explanation of why their answer was the correct one, they failed to mention the equally valid one, although they did demonstrate why three other choices were wrong. Mmmm. Then in a reading comprehension section, where the question was to choose whether I, II, or III statements were supported in the text, only one was supported, although the "correct" answer, according to the book was that all three were correct. My worry is that if 2 out of 30 questions had partially correct or incorrect answer choices, what about the rest of the book? I don't have time to go into this in depth. If you ask, I'll give you the specifics.

I don't know if one can say that other than that problem, this is a good study guide, but I'll try. It has generally good explanations for questions for both the verbal and quantitative sections of the GRE. It is printed on quality paper and is printed clearly with excellent layouts. This means it won't crumble and get soiled easily, as most other GRE test prep books do because they're printed on cheap paper.
