Cum Se Spune "Legenda Luceafarului" In Engleza?
Pornind de la idea ca nu exista traducere perfecta - si motivele care ar sustine aceasta afirmatie sunt naucitor de numeroase: cele de ordin lingvistic, cu diferentele de sistem gramatical. de topica, de incarcatura semantica, etc., cele care tin de istoria literaturii fiecarei tari in parte sau de sensibilitatile artistice ale elitelor intelectuale -, am ajuns la idea ca, asa cum nu se poate transcrie cantecul unei privighetori, nici poeziile romanesti nu pot fi traduse fidel. Mai ales LUCEAFARUL. Ajunsesem sa ii compatimesc pe strainii care nu cunosteau limba si care ar fi tentat o cat de mica apropiere de lirica eminesciana.
"The Legend of the Evening Star" - "Legenda Luceafarului", aparuta la Prospero Press in Statele Unite, a facut sa-mi schimb opinia intr-un mod radical. Evitand folosirea "vesmantului traditional al poeziei britanice din secolele XVIII-XIX"sau chiar al celei shakespeareene, Adrian George Sahlean prefera o modernizare a traducerii. Prin aceasta manevra de manageriat poetic, textul devine mult mai usor de inteles si, in consecinta, accesibil unui numar mai mare de iubitori de poezie. Eminescu devine dintr-o data mai mult contemporanul nostru. Spiritul si litera cat se poate de moderne ale Luceafarului il determna pe Adrian George Sahlean sa se desfasoare "natural". Desi traducatorul declara ca "nu a incercat sa modernizeze nici limba si nici gramatica lui Eminescu", prin simplul fapt ca este prima varianta de acest tip, "The Legend of the Evening Star" ne apare asemenea unei montari indraznete a unei piese de teatru a lui Shakespeare. Urmare a unor indelungi cautari, traducerea isi scrie propriul destin. Acela de a ajunge la sufletul cititorului prin "combinatii simple si previzibile" dar care au "efect cumulativ si o linistitoare adancime" (A.G.S.). Muzicalitatea intrinseca a poeziei se transmite, prin eleganta limbajului, variantei in engleza. Chiar si cei care nu cunosc prea bine aceasta limba pot recunoaste urmatoarele versuri: -- Tudor Vladescu, 'Romania Literara - nr.43, 29 oct- 4 nov 1997' - in Romanian
O opera de autentica valoare, odata creata nu mai moare. Ea fecundeaza spiritele cititorilor trezind si punand in lucrare talantii pe care ei insusi ii au ( de care uneori sunt mai mult sau mai putin constienti) schimbandu-i pe ei, si in multe cazuri, si pe cei din jurul lor. Asa se face ca filozofii si poetii greci au fecundat cultura romana, mai tarziu ca pe ea italiana, apoi pe cea franceza si germana (toti marii filozofi clasici germani au fost studenti ai filozofilor Greciei antice), dupa cum chiar si cultura araba si ebraica prin traducerea in araba a lui Platon si Aristotel de catre Avicena, si in ebraica a acelorasi de catre Maimonide.
Asa porni si Luceafarul poeziei romanesti, M. Eminescu. El a rasarit dar nu s-a mai stins, ci s-a inscris pe orbita culturii omenirii, gravitand in jurul planetei sale, intrand in combinatiile zodiacale ale oamenilor, influentand destinele, patronand si uitandu-se cu 'rece ochi de mort' sau cu incandescenta privire purificatoare la mostenirea sa lasata in urma.
'Porni Luceafarul'... si iata-l plecat din leaganul Botosanilor prin toate plaiurile batute de piciorul mioritei noastre, trecand apoi frontierele tarii si peregrinand in traduceri prin limbile si culturile lumii, si iata-l intr-o noua aparitie in SUA prin efortul, grija, dragostea si talentul filologului si psihologului Adrian George Sahlean. Este vorba de volumul intitulat 'Legenda Luceafarului' (Prospero Press, Newton, Ma., 1996, 48 p.) aparut in excelente conditii tehnice si grafice, volum ce contine poemul lui Eminescu tradus de Adrian G. Sahlean si magistratl ilustrat de regretatul sau prieten Traian Alexandru Filip. -- Theodor Damian, 'Gracious Light' NY - in Romanian

"The Legend" is one of the most representative "chef d'oeuvre" for the Romanian literature. It was born from an impressive ability of translating folklore into real art, using a modern view upon an ancient motif. Apart from being a priceless treasure of language, "The Legend" was built on an eternal discrepancy : between immortality and mere existence, between genius'superiority and human wickedness, between deep thought and superficiality, between insensitivity and real love. In a word, it is about high aims of perfection to which love is paid as tribute.

As a native Romanian who has read this fantastic poem in both languages, I can say that this superb piece of work is the closest to a perfect translation that I have read thus far. Although in my mind it still fails to capture the phenomenal magic and unexplainable charm of the original poem, it is a must-read for English-speakers nevertheless. I have always adored Eminescu's work as brilliant and amazingly expressive, and it makes me happy to see that it is available to a broader range of readers in a format that would even make the author proud.

A Wonderful and Engaging Translation,

This translation of Mihai Eminescu's masterwork captures the essence of the original work's musicality and poetic nuance. Translated in the style of English-language poetry of the period (late 19th Century), it flows easily and is rewarding when read aloud. Mr. Sahlean is justly considered the premiere translator of Eminescu into English, and this illustrated edition succeeds as a tribute to Romania's "National Poet".
There is no sense of limitation or restriction found in some translations, and especially gratifying are lines and stanzas that capture the imagination. My favorites include: "Men merely live by stars of luck/ And star-crossed fatefulness..." and "Sweet scented blossom fills the air/And falls in silver rain..." There are many other moments of surpassing beauty to be found within this work--it will become a treasured addition to any poetry collection.
