Product Description

These 500 LED video panel uses the 500 ultra bright, 5500K LED's and has an equivalent output of 500 watts of incandescent light yet draws about 100 watts. The 5500K daylight balanced LEDs offer a full spectrum, beautifully soft light.LED lights off significantly further "throw" than a comparable fluorescent light. This is because each of the 500 LED lights has a 30 degree beam angle lens that directs light forward. This beam angle creates a beam pattern that is useful from 1 - 15 feet.LED lights are ideal for location work because they are virtually shockproof and offer the brightest light in the smallest form factor.

These are the same LED panels you see everywhere. In fact, my wasn't advertised as a Fancier, but it has the Fancier name on it. I assume these are all made in China, and various companies sell the same panels.

The build quality is OK. The barn doors seem useful, and they are billed as folding down to protect the LEDs. However, they really don't fold down well. They are not staggered so the thickness isn't taken into account. And the bare barndoors will rest right on top of the LEDs. One whack, and you are now missing LEDs.

I use the foam padding to insert between the barndoors and the lights for protection. Ideally, they would provide a thick foam that would nestle in and around the LEDs to make sure they can survive flights and the baggage handlers.

Oh, did I mention there is exactly zero diffusion screens over these? The LEDs are just exposed. This is worse than a LED flashlight. At least there, there is a plastic disk covering the lights. Don't like that.

A dimmer isn't really necessary. That adds $50 or so to the cost. The bank of four switches gives enough control, and you can move the light stand in or out as needed. 12 volt operation would be nice, but that adds about $90 to the price.

The best thing about these are the cool operation, the low wattage used, and the fact that they are relatively cheap. They could be a lot better, but if you want more, you have to pay at least double the cost and get a name brand. Oh, the Litepanel LEDs are just wonderful. Everything you'd want in a LED light. But, they are about 1600. Ouch!

Recommended. I like the light it gives out. Tungsten is great, and is cheap, but boy is it hot!

I got this unit today and tested it to find out that it is in no way as bright as a 500w incandescent bulb as the description states. I uploaded a comparison photo so everyone can see this. Don't waste your money on this if you need the light of a 500w bulb.

This is far too preliminary to carry any weight but I can't help myself. Because these units were very inexpensive I was expecting them to look and feel somewhat "cheap." They don't at all! They're actually quite heavy; all metal - solid and substantial. They were well packed and protected by plastic bags and film. The directions were funny (translated by the Chinese manufacturer I think) but contained what little information I needed to know before throwing the first switch. Every LED in both units lit brightly and I was pleased with the throw and the adjustability gained from the four LED banks switches.
This unit may have been redesigned since the review above. The barn doors close fine when the foam shipping protector is removed. They don't shut as flatly with the foam left in but I agree with the other reviewer that the LEDs are quite exposed, so I'm leaving the shipping foam in place during transport.
The mounting is very clever. The mount fits nicely on a standard 5/8" stud. There's an adjustment lever to allow the units to tilt in one plane. The mount attaches to the light using, what I would describe as, a big, beefy version of a hot shoe mount with a square plate on the end of a bolt, locking with a very large thumbwheel. The clever part is the square plate can be slid into a channel on any one of the four sides. And, it can slide almost the whole length of each side. Very, very versatile! I'll update this review when I've had more experience with the units and they've gotten some miles on them.

I have been using this LED light for just under 6 months for about 6 hours a week, and I just noticed two rows of the LEDs have died. I have tried emailing Fancier, as I am still within the 6 month warranty period, but have had no luck. The same with phone calls, all are ignored. I guess it's a case of you get what you pay for. I can't recommend these lights if they die after less than 6 months.

Very good light, but with just a few hours of use, had some lines of LEDs burned on the 2 units I bought

I ordered three of these lights. They work OK, and for the price, I think are a bargain. But, don't do it. Save your money a bit longer and get something better. Why? Because you will quickly outgrow the inexpensive cost of these lights. The color is not balanced at all. By that, I mean not at all! A single light will change color temp over an hour. Where you started shooting is not where you end. That's a bummer for interviews, or other video where you may use footage shot at anytime. Combine more than one light on set and you can just take a shot in the dark as to where to set your white balance. Quality seems good, but then again one of the cords on a light went out two days after I got it. Save your money. There is a reason these are cheap.

I have three of these, and use them to light documentary interviews. Short version: they're awesome. Because they're so low-wattage, I can use them in the weird scenarios I often find in documentary -- for instance, some dude's basement with one outlet on a heavily used circuit. Plug three of them in via an extension cord, turn 'em up, no problem. Cool.

I'm shooting with a Nikon D7100 and occasionally a Canon 5DmkIII. With both cameras, these lights seem to provide exactly what I'm looking for: a decent amount of light with basically zero heat or noise (there is a slight high-pitched whine from one of the lights, but I'm not hearing it on my recordings). They're lightweight (and seem fragile, though I haven't broken any of them...yet?). I always do manual white balance using a gray card/white card, so I can't comment on whether these are truly balanced at the right color temp. They do seem consistent light-to-light, so at least that's good. The dimmers work fine and feel pretty solid. The power supplies feel pretty cheap, and something is clunking around inside one of them, but it came that way.

One HUGE TIP I do have is that these things scare the talent when they're turned up. Looking at the lights is a blinding, glare-tastic experience. So if you're using these anywhere in the eyeline of a human being, I strongly suggest you get some kind of cheap softbox/other diffusion method to tame the light. With diffusion in front of the light, no problem. Raw light, everybody squints and freaks out. Lesson learned.

I am not a lighting pro, but I needed something that was super portable and reasonably flexible for interviews. These lights fit the bill. I probably could have gotten away with fluorescents for cheaper, but I'm happy with these (and very happy that I can dim them individually). I'd totally buy these again.
