5.0 out of 5 stars Silly but Hilarious, August 7, 2005
This review is from: The little king, the little queen, the little monster;: And other stories you can make up yourself
Oh, I got into such trouble when I was in 1st grade and brought in this book to read to the class during milk & cookies. This was only the 2nd book I'd ever chosen to read out loud, but I was sure everyone would like it as much as I did.

So first I read The Little King, to lukewarm reception. Then I read The Little Queen, which was essentially the same story except with gender changed. I was starting to lose the audience, and then I began The Little Monster--essentially the same story except that all the Monster said was "Bup Bup Bup" in Monster-Speak! I thought it was hilarious, but its ironic brilliance was lost upon my dullard classmates. Worse, my teacher thought it was idiocy and she told me it was a terrible book and I should sit down. I guess she'd have frowned upon Lewis Carroll's use of nonsense too.

Well the heck with her. 36 years later I still think it was a brilliant book, and I can't wait to read it to my young son (who probably will bring it to school, get into trouble, etc...)

I see it's selling for $60 used, but I wouldn't sell my copy!

5.0 out of 5 stars A fabulous little book, January 26, 2005
This review is from: The little king, the little queen, the little monster;: And other stories you can make up yourself
This is a board book from before there were board books. The stories are short and simply told and children will love the repetition. The drawings are charming stick-figure scrawls with little details that bring the images alive. The best story, of course, is the Little Monster - in my house, this was always called "The Bup-Bup Book." The only drawback is the cheap paperback construction. This book is crying out for a reprinting - this time on sturdy cardboard.
