Book Description

July 29, 2010
"A wonderful, in- your- face book relating one young person's struggles with Attention Deficit Disorder..."
--Dr. Ned Hallowell M.D., Harvard Medicine

---------------------------Preview--------------------------------------

(THIS BOOK IS CURRENTLY ONE OF THE MAIN FOCUSES OF AN IMPORTANT PhD DISSERTATION AT THE UNIVERSITY OF HOUSTON RELATED TO THOSE "DIAGNOSED" WITH ADHD AND THEIR UNDERLYING THOUGHT PROCESSES)

Written, for the most part high on Adderall given by his "expert psychiatrist", "mADD man", is a message for change in the educational system, specifically with regards to the gifted children that are wired with alternative brain chemistries and stigmatized with such labels as "ADHD", or "learning disabled". "mADD man" follows one of the most outlandish and memorable characters in literature through his childhood suspensions and traumatic experiences incurred during Hebrew school, to his ups and downs in regular school, his party animal antics at Tulane University, straight through his almost fatal decline into existential depression while blowing massive amounts of white powder and Adderall in Shanghai, China and ultimately hitting bottom while smoking crystal meth rocks with his psychiatrist in Hollywood. The author has re-emerged as a pioneering entrepreneur and outspoken activist for ADHD miscomprehension.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Written when Robinson was twenty-three, the book nonetheless demonstrates clarity and insight not often credited to young people." - Foreword Magazine

"...He also describes his mind’s tendency to drift and what he must do to keep his daydreams in check. These first-person accounts, in which he places his symptoms in a positive light, will give hope to people with ADHD, their families, and professionals."

From the Back Cover

"Finally!  A blunt but objective book that debunks ADHD labels and exposes the unfortunate and limiting ways in which societal norms inhibit brilliance.  Mr. Robinson's journey of interrupted genius is a first and important step toward a much-needed societal shift in which learning disabilities are celebrated...not diagnosed"

-Dr. Peter J. McDonald, PhD. (Educational Policy), Headmaster of Eagle Hill School and published author within various academic journals.

"I really enjoyed the glimpse into the fascinating mind of such a powerful and gifted young writer."

-T. Krohn, Random House

"A wonderful, in- your- face book relating one young person's struggles with Attention Deficit Disorder. You will laugh at his humor and cry at his despondence as he takes you through his journey"

-Dr. Ned Hallowell M.D., Author of, "Driven to Distraction"

"A Masterpiece"

-Alexander Franchilli, Composer

More About the Author

Brian J. Robinson graduated from Tulane University where he majored in Philosophy and developed an early talent for writing. Brian became a regular contributor Tulane University's newspaper, Hullabaloo. Recently, Brian focused his writing on society's misconception of people diagnosed as ADHD. Brian's memoir, "mADD man," has the intention to catalyze a paradigm shift in the educational system. Currently, the system stigmatizes and marginalizes students wired differently. This is direct attempt to push educators, parents, and society to think outside of the box. Brian J. Robinson currently resides in New York City where he continues to push limits and illuminate others about different ways of thinking.

He has now resurfaced as a pioneering entrepreneur/writer in New York City and continues to speak passionately to anyone who will listen about the ills of the educational system. "mADD man is a rare first person account of a life lived through the colorful lens that is "ADHD", and a personal story of untamed chaos, and lasting redemption.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Very Helpful Read, June 28, 2010
This review is from: mADD man (Paperback)
My son has ADHD and was 15 when I read this. As I read Mr. Robinson's book, I was able to share passages with my son that prompted him to often say, "wow, that's the way I feel!" Our family does not buy into the who label-thing associated with ADHD...preferring instead to viwe this "condition" as just one of many possible ways of being...neither good, nor bad. This book is an excellent resource for helping your ADHD child understand that they are not alone.

5.0 out of 5 stars Go along for the ride!, June 27, 2010
This review is from: mADD man (Paperback)
mADD man paints a vivid picture of an extreme example of one man's struggle to conform to societal norms. While at first glance, it may seem that the root of the author's issues are his ADHD, we come to understand that perhaps the problem is with our metrics for success and the limitations of our educational system. The author's tale is both engaging and inspiring. He manages not to "cure" his ADHD, but instead to understand how he fits into life's puzzle and build a life that better suits his style of thinking. mADD man can be read as a hopeful glance into a future where brilliant minds are allowed to create and develop, nurtured by untraditional methods rather than forced to fit into the rigid system currently in place.

I finished reading this a few weeks ago after gaining interest after speaking with Brian at his book release party. His stories are very captivating and makes you believe you really can do anything. He is very easy to relate to and I would recommend everyone take a look at this book. I also feel his journey is not over being only 26. Great job!!
