Generation Y is the generation of tattoos, cell phones, social networking, iPods, authenticity, social justice, racial diversity, and community. But it is also the generation of broken homes, school shootings, immense performance pressure, loneliness, self-indulgence, and insecurity. Christians have largely failed to bring restoration to this 70 million-member group of young people. What are we missing? And what are the consequences if it doesn't change?

Reaching a broken generation with the hope of the gospel

Generation Y is the generation of tattoos, cell phones, social networking, and iPods. It is the generation of authenticity, social justice, racial diversity, and community. But it is also the generation of broken homes, school shootings, immense performance pressure, loneliness, self-indulgence, and insecurity. Christians have largely failed to bring restoration to this 70 million-member group of young people. What are we missing? And what are the consequences if it doesn't change?

Josh James Riebock takes you on a journey deep into the soul of a generation that is slowly being transformed from within. Whether you're a pastor, a volunteer, a church leader, a friend, or a member of Generation Y yourself, you will value this honest and hopeful look at restoring a broken generation with the life-changing power of the gospel.

"A must-read for anyone seeking to understand Gen Y. . . . Not only will Josh's imaginative, insightful, and gritty inside look prepare you to engage a new generation, but God might just change you in the process."--John Burke, author of No Perfect People Allowed and Soul Revolution

"mY Generation puts language to the generational epidemic of brokenness and points to hope that is possible through the power of community and genuine faith. You will find within these pages compelling authenticity and remarkable humor, as well as a vision of living the way of Jesus."--Jon Peacock, director of Axis at Willow Creek Community Church

Josh James Riebock has been a successful youth pastor and is now a sought-after speaker at conferences, colleges, and churches across the country. He speaks both to Generation Y and to people who are involved in leading this generation. He lives with his wife, Kristen, in downtown Austin, Texas.

More About the Author

Josh was raised near Chicago, in a loving home that also featured alcoholism, hoarding, and a buffet of other peccadilloes. After college hopping for five years, Josh took a job at a church. It was there that he became reacquainted with his childhood love for telling stories-- Speaking of love, it's also during that time that he got married to Kristen, a girl that he grew up just a few houses away from.

Hungry for something a bit different--and certainly a warmer climate--the two of them moved to Austin, where Josh joined another church staff. The following year would be one of the most eventful of his life. It began with Kristen and Josh adopting their dog/son, Ditka, whom they became instantly obsessed with. Then, after nearly six years of working in churches, Josh decided that it was time to chase his long dormant dream of becoming a writer. So he quit his church job. But before he could really enjoy his newfound pursuit, both of his parents died only weeks apart. And while this was, and remains, the most difficult time in his life, it has also played a crucial role in making him into who he is today, shaping the way he writes, speaks, and interacts with the world.

In 2009, Baker Publishing Group released his first book, My Generation. His upcoming book, Heroes and Monsters, will be released in the spring of 2012. Josh maintains a busy travel schedule, speaking around the country at conferences, colleges, and churches. And yes, he really enjoys it very, very much.

If he isn't writing or speaking, he's probably in Austin, Texas, spending time with Kristen and Ditka, or reading, fiction probably, maybe something by Daniel Wallace or Chuck Palahniuk or Dave Eggers, or he might be watching an 80's movie, or talking about football with his friends.

5.0 out of 5 stars This Book Rocks, October 1, 2009

I was totally surprised by this book. You always hear the old cliché "I laughed, I cried..." Well, I really did. It caught me off guard. The author uses vivid imagery, humor and creativity to bring stories to life. You feel like you're there. He unashamedly pulls off the shiny veneer of a broken generation in desperate need of unconditional love. The stories break your heart but he doesn't leave you there. He calls you to action. It's very moving.

5.0 out of 5 stars Must read for those reaching out to THIS generation!!!, January 13, 2010

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: mY Generation: A Real Journey of Change and Hope (Paperback)
This is the most honest book I have read in a long time. Josh's writing style reminds me of Donald Miller in his "Blue Like Jazz" book. "My Generation" is a book filled with numerous stories in a unified theme; more-so than just one continuous story line. The focus of these real-life stories is on the Millennial Generation or "Gen-Y". Josh gives us a broad, sweeping glance into both his life and the lives of many that he has come across in his time as a youth pastor, member, and friend of this generation.

What is it that the Generation Y - the teenagers in our student ministries - are thinking and feeling when it comes to the church and Christianity? Why are they graduating from youth group and leaving the church? Why are they feeling disenfranchised? What's at the core of their emotional make-up and how do we respond and reach out to them? These are several of the questions that were brought to light in a very unique and fresh way through Josh's writing.

I love the approach that this book takes. I think everyone wanting to reach or impact the Millennial Generation should pick this one up. It's inspiring, thought provoking, passionate, raw, engaging, and challenging. My copy is filled with earmarks that I plan on going back to and reading again. Visit Josh's web site at [...] for more.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book, I cried as I read, October 25, 2009
This review is from: mY Generation: A Real Journey of Change and Hope (Paperback)
Josh used to be on staff at my church. I didn't know what to think of him when he introduced at our leadership community with his muscles and tattoos and his beautiful blonde fiance. Not that I didn't like muscles or tattoos, but it's easy to dismiss someone as either trying too hard to be cool or having it all together. And I certainly didn't feel as cool or together as I viewed him to be. I felt like the last kid picked for the team. Now I know the truth. He felt that way too. Josh writes with raw emotion about the trials of life of this generation. He writes honestly and authentically about his own struggles. As I read this book, I cried bitter tears as I related my own pain to Josh's and the people he writes about. Josh, I know we've never met but thank you so much for letting me into your pain. Thank you for the message of hope and the call to be Jesus to those around me. I encourage others to read this book. It will change your heart.
