Golden Age Mystery entertains,

Plot:
The Bull Woods is a dark and never-logged area near Jonesville, a small logging town dominated by the sawmill's owner and a fanatical preacher. When murder occurs inside the woods, the town suspects evil incarnate is to blame (whipped to a frenzy by the clergyman.) Schoolteacher Edward Spence and visitor Bleeker Twist, staying at a cabin deep within the woods, suspect the evil is human and decide to investigate the killing. My Review: Duncan's mystery is set among the giant redwoods of the west coast, and the locale is interesting. The writing is fluid. The mystery is satisfying, and so is the pyschological analysis of some of the characters involved. I love these golden age mysteries, but had never heard of Duncan, until reading a positive review of his Shade of Time in a book of Anthony Boucher's 1940's book reviews. He's virtually unknown today, but this book provided me with a few hours of entertainment in an unusual setting.
