This is one of the best surprises in quite a while for me. I search out classic-era rock instrumental music as part of my routine. This one was "obscure" from my perspective, but suggestions from other reviews encouraged me to try it and I'm glad I did.

Magicians Hat is very pleasant with its variety of instruments and overall balance. The tempo's are varied enough to keep it interesting and the teasing with the jazz spices on piano and sax were beautiful. I really like a mixture of instruments and this delivers.

I recommend this for anyone even thinking about journeying into an unknown territory - it's definately not going to be offensive.

I love the vibe Bo Hansson gets on his albums - they are all very intimate, friendly and inviting. This 1972 album is no different, although musically it finds him exploring jazzier styles a bit more than on his debut album Lord of the Rings (1970). The jazzy styles are featured a tiny bit on the lengthy opening track Big City. For those of you that do not like the sound of jazz on a Bo Hansson album - fear not. In large part, the music on Magician's Hat is mellow prog rock that mixes Swedish folk styles and European classical music and features Bo's excellent spacey organ, mini-moog, and mellotron playing. Although Bo is a multi-instrumentalist, he is supported on Magician's Hat by a flute/sax player, guitarist, and drummer. There is some great ensemble work along with good playing by all members. This remastered album is very nice and features restored cover art, great sound quality, and lots of informative liner notes. Recommended along with Lord of the Rings (1970), Attic Thoughts (1975), and Watership Down (1977).

Beautiful, relaxing 70's instrumental prog-rock album from Bo Hansson(R.I.P). Similar to his 'Lord of the Rings' album in some ways, but also with some jazzier
touches this time. This is enchanting instrumental music that will take you to another world, perfect background music for reading a good fantasy book!

I first heard this on underground FM radio in the early 70's in Kansas City, and it was instantly likable... I think I heard Passport's 1st LP at the same time, on the same station no doubt...was that KBER or KCJC...hmm...those were the daze...

I bought Magician's Hat in 1972 and wore it out, mostly late nite while crashing. It's beautiful music, of it's time but very innovative for it's time. It still holds up today and in my mind is a classic of the early 70's laid back jazz tinged rock music with 'sounds' that was happening then. Especially the sounds....

As a footnote, Jimi Hendrix used to play a song called "Tax Free" during his shows, which he credited to Hansson and Carlson. That would be the same Bo Hansson.

An instrumental album, far better than his "Lord of the Rings". Ranging from western themes into the 70's obscure. Comparable to David Axelrod.
