Excellent resource!,

This review is from: medEssentials for the USMLE Step 1 (Kaplan Medessenitals for the USMLE Step 1) (Paperback)
This is a great complement to First Aid, as it has somewhat better organization and more in-depth explanations of key concepts. The best way to use it is probably to follow along all throughout your first two years, then focus more on First Aid during your intense Step1 study period, referring back to this when necessary.
I highly recommend this, and the Kaplan Step1 Qbook, to supplement your study materials.

The book itself is great since it gives you some more info than the FA alone and has a better organization of the material, but i have only gone over a couple of sections. Get the book if you want a little more info than whats in the FA or you prefer table and diagrams.
The internet access questions are of very limited help when it comes to STEP studying, so i would not get the book because of the internet access. Also, the book does not have a code like most review books that you have to scratch off. When you register on the site it will ask you, what the last word on a certain page is, and thats the code. Just read the pages where it talks about logging in to the site to register.

This is an excellent review book for Step 1. Very thorough with great pictures and charts and tables. Does not have mnemonics or ways to remember facts like First Aid but the amt of information is very good. A definite worthy purchase.

PERFECT WHEN USED WITH FIRST AID,
This review is from: medEssentials for the USMLE Step 1 (Kaplan Medessenitals for the USMLE Step 1) (Paperback)
First Aid on step 1 is a great review book. Med essentials to be made to read with with first aid. First aid can only cover soo much so they leave out alot of information. Med essentials figured how to add important info and made it look like first aid. So you can add all the notes to fist aid or read both books at the same time. If you are anal about achieving 99 percentile then med essentials is for you. If not, then first aid will do.

This book is much better than the kaplan review books for USMLE/Comlex Step 1. It is a comprehensive summary book with enough detail that you can use it in your course work for the first 2 years of medical school. I recommend buying it your first year and reviewing it as you progress through the courses. It has way too much info to be used as a review book for step 1 studying. Stick to FIRST AID for that.

This is a good REVIEW book. Don't expect it to teach you or explain anything because that's not the purchase. It has great charts and tables that are well organized. It is often referred to as "kaplan's version of first aid" However, I have to say that it is better than first aid in how well it organizes information. Sometimes, though, it includes a little too much detail. A combination of medessentials and first aid, in my opinion, is better than having just one. If you had to pick 1, however, go with first aid. It's the gold standard.

Kaplan's version of First Aid,

I read the reviews for this and basically bought the book sight unseen because people said it was a good companion to First Aid.
Don't make that mistake. This book is the same length as First Aid, it goes over the exact same topics in the exact same order. It is a first aid clone and it appears that they are directly competing with First Aid for the USMLE prep book title. The only difference I could tell is it has far fewer helpful explanations and far more charts. I am literally angry at myself for buying this book online and not looking through it before. A quick flip through would have immediately identified it as a poor clone. I am reminded of the crappy Barron's books that my parents used to buy me in high school. It is of poor quality and adds nothing to anyone who already owns an edition of first aid. This is the third Kaplan product that I have purchased and it will never happen again. |
