4.0 out of 5 stars Good for the price I paid
I got my miBook cooking kit for $38 on a super clearance and the SD cards for $6.99. It's working great so far. I wasn't expecting too much given the deep discount but for what I paid I think it's great. The 300+ recipes were worth the price alone. I think the good thing about this product is that it does make following a recipe much easier and interesting. I must admit,...

3.0 out of 5 stars not bad
this product is not bad i do think there is some work that needs to be done. the sound is very soft. there is a speaker jack but it is on the bottom so it is of no use. i would recommend waiting for the next generation.

Well, the concept is great. The visual and audio are very poor quality. I guess we are spoiled with better quality in our gadgets. This reminds me of a new ...first time....30 years ago gadget. Im so sad this gadget has a fuzzy visual and soft audio ( turn off your TV so you can hear it). Maybe mine is not working well but the quality you see on your PC demo is not what you see. Im going to scout around for a better one.
Don't think I'd recommend this.

2.0 out of 5 stars No customer service, January 26, 2009

I bought the MiBook for Christmas and it worked OK for 3 weeks and then stopped recognizing the SD cards.
Attempts to contact Photoco customer service failed. No reply to email and they don't answer the phone.
This is a very dicey product.

I must admit, however, that I would have returned it immediately if I had paid the full asking price. The graphics are a bit 'old-school'. I was expecting much higher quality there but for the price I paid, I'll be glad if it continues working long enough for a good ROI, and I don't have any of the issues the others described.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pleased with MiBook, March 15, 2009
This review is from: miBook MKC10 Cooking Kit Includes Quick and Easy Meals and Irresistible Desserts Recipe Cards (Electronics)
I have had this since Christmas (now 3 months old) when my mother purchased this for me as a gift. Two of my other family members have this already, and she knew I would like it. She was correct. The photo frame/video player is just as good as any of the others I own (GPX, Coby, Polaroid, and Pan Digital). The video quality and sound quality is very adequate to guide you through the recipes on a step by step basis. The remote makes it easy for you to back up and go forward in the slide show presentations. I also like the ability to move it without having it plugged in. This unit comes with a rechargable battery pack. Unlike other reviewers, I have had no issues with sound being to soft, or video being poor/fuzzy, nor had any problems with things breaking, and I use mine a few times a week, and many times just as a photo frame. I have since purchase four additional SD book cards with no problems, and a ton more recipes. I highly recommend this to someone who wants an updated take on cook books and likes gadgets also.

1.0 out of 5 stars Photoco cooking up the same old garbage!!!, February 5, 2009
This review is from: miBook MKC10 Cooking Kit Includes Quick and Easy Meals and Irresistible Desserts Recipe Cards (Electronics)
Well for once they have a decent concept but instead of spending the time and energy to develop the idea and place it in a high quality device they repurposed their previously unsuccessful PhotoShare. (Take a look at the reviews on that device) The cheap and easily breakable Photoshare is now the MiBook. Perhaps they have a series on how to do business? or maybe a series on customer service?
Save yourself the fustration and don't buy the MiBook!
Here is a better suggestion, find a portable SD viewer product that has a history of quality & customer service, buy some of the instructional videos or better yet, go to [...] and watch some of the same videos for free.

3.0 out of 5 stars Nice but limited in function, November 13, 2010
This review is from: miBook MKC10 Cooking Kit Includes Quick and Easy Meals and Irresistible Desserts Recipe Cards (Electronics)
I got this unit at a bargain price [~US $50] and I am happy with that. It works well as a digital picture frame with audio. For the price I paid I would say it is as good as other similar frames. I have not tried adding my own videos yet but I suspect it will play them alright since the recipe books clips are OK.

The miBook books are cute and the video clips play well - recipes are easy and the way they are presented is smart. They first show you the list of ingredients, and then step by step directions which show you what to do - there is a pause at the end of each segment so you can catch up with chopping veggies or turning on the stove or whatever... It works well for what it is.

I was hoping this would work as an eReader of sorts. It can display files in a variety of formats, but there is no bookmark function so if you are reading a long book for example, and you stop for the night on page 20, you would have to press forward 20 times to get back to the same spot... which is kind of a bad flaw if you have files of any length. Overall I am happy with it but it is sad they didn't add a book mark feature or this would be an excellent eReader on a budget.

I was able to get my miBook player and 2 cookbooks for $30 and I am beyond thrilled my purchase. I originally purchased this device to check out its multimedia capabilities. I am looking for a low, low cost, solid state replacement to the portable DVD player the kids. I'm tired of skipping and scratched disks. This device will work for that; however, it isn't durable enough to hand over to the kids. I fear one drop would be the end of this player. It really is best suited for tabletop placement.

I had no intention of using it for the included cookbooks or any of the other books offered on this platform. I was just going to look at the videos to determine the best video format and resolution that will display. That idea didn't last long. The recipes are really easy to make and are in a DivX ffmpeg format that can play on a PC. Each step is a separate video file in the recipe directory. Great for getting my kids involved in the kitchen. They can watch the video, perform that step and press play for the next step. I have already ordered more cook books.

The player has a simple, easy interface. The quality of the device is on par with other inexpensive electronics. The only two gripes I have are the SD (not SDHC) slot doesn't let the SD card fully insert. When a card is in, it still sticks out a quarter of an inch. This could very easily snag on something and damage the SD slot or card. Second, the buttons on the front are not very responsive; I have to push them very hard. The remote works just fine though. I like the plastic shrink wrap on the remote, easy clean up and lets you have access to replace the battery without removal.

Allow me to repeat, I am beyond thrilled with my purchase, and I ended up really using it as a video cookbook.

The concept is good, but the product is very poor. Bad sound, bad navigation, bad product. It is my opinion that you, like myself, will never use this product.

Great item. Easy to use. You choose your recipe and begin. You watch a demonstation and pause between the steps as you follow along. You can purchase additional disks to expand your recipe library.
