Excellent display for the money but I DID have one problem that I believe was due to the product. The LED backlight doesn't come with a current-limiting resistor. Instead, a single diode is used to drop the voltage from 5V to the 4.2V that will drive the LED backlight. I hooked up the display to my Arduino board as laid out in the diagram on the package and managed to FRY my Arduino board. I am not 100% sure that it was due to the LED backlight, but my Arduino board no longer is capable of providing 5V on any pin. Typically, this type of failure is due to a circuit trying to pull too much current from the Arduino. With no current-limiting resistor for the display, I suspect that the LED backlight in essence shorted out my Arduino.

The solution is simple: eliminate the diode in the package that is to be hooked between the power supply and pin 15 and INSTEAD use a 500 ohm or higher value resistor to limit the current. Fortunately, I had another Arduino board, and I hooked it up exactly as the first time, except I used a 670 ohm resistor to limit the current to the backlight, and everything worked perfectly.

So with the caveat that I would suggest a current-limiting resistor instead of a diode for the LED display, it's a great little display for the money. Plenty bright, easy to read.

it works but it can be a chore to read the display. Even after adjusting the contrast. I would recommend a black on green display over this white on blue display.

Fortunately it works using either eight or four pins for display saving valuable outputs on the processor.

The unit works well with my arduino Uno r3, it seems to be well built and is very clear and easy to read. Came with a list of pin-outs, a sample hookup diagram and everything needed to get you started.

I didnt realize I had to solder the pins to the board myself though. It doesnt state that in the description, so it took me a little while to do that since I have never soldered to a PCB before. It was a good learning experience though.

It took me a little while to get this little number working just right - and I had a slightly difficult time integrating the 10k potentiometer which came with this package.

The thing folks often get to thinking about devices that plug into the Arduino platform is that they will simply be "plug and play." This is not always the case - especially not as far as I have experienced! That said this LCD has a fantastic adjustable contrast and the LED backlight brings the characters into wonderful focus.

Many of the online schematics and pinouts for Arduino application of compatible LCD's do not include information regarding the wiring of the LED backlight. Such is the case in the documentation that I read. It would be helpful if a more detailed description of the function of all of the pinouts was shipped with this product, as most of us are not electrical engineers. While the package does come with an insert and the manufacturer likely assumes we can access the internet to troubleshoot, the fact is it would be nice to have a more detailed product insert with the product. Overall decent - but more literature would be nice.

Regarding the install, here was my process:

1) Solder pins in headers to LCD board (I am pitiful at soldering, but I am learning)
2) Wire according to two or three different schematics / Fritzing diagrams online
3) Search for pinouts for this particular model online when wireup did not work (I did not have a backlight)
4) Rewire mixing instructions from two or three different websites, and load code and libraries with slight pin modifications to account for differences between standard layouts and my own.

This LCD from Microtivity is extremely well made. Great Quality LCD and PCB. Microtivity supplied Female pin sockets with One 10K Pot and 1N4004 diode. But I would recommend Male Pin soldered to the back of the LCD as you can stick it to the breadboard and on the final design you can add the pins to the PCB with Microcontroller like Arduino on one PCB itself. This will make easy to test and install it in your project (if you are building multiple)
