As a middle school principal I had the opportunity to have 70 of my students read this prepublication in order to give Richard feedback. Student reaction to the book was overwhelmingly positive. Many finished it in the first couple of days. It has a great message regarding people/kids with differences and the characters in the book get this message across extremely well. A great book for this age group including reluctant readers.
I read the (admittedly quite short) first chapter with a 3rd grader today. It stretched his reading ability a bit, but he said he enjoyed it, and most importantly, asked "what's cell 25, and why's it scary," "who're they looking for," and "why're they looking for them." When I asked if he'd be willing to read the "chapter book" to find out, his answer was an enthusiastic "Yeah!"
This book Is GREAT!!!!!!!!! We bought it for our 10 year old son after hearing the reviews on the radio. My son loved it and he finished reading it within 3 days. I started reading the same and found very good. I just couldn't keep it down until I am done reading the whole book. We both just can't wait to read the next book. My son keeps asking me when it will be out.
I got this book for my grandson last year and asked him to read a few pages just to see if it was worth my reading it. :o) We were in the car at that time and he couldn't stop reading. This is a young man who doesn't like to read ! He took the book home with him and read the rest in just a couple days. He and I anxiously waited for the 2nd book to come out and he again has finished reading it in just a few days.....Richard Paul Evans has hit on a good thing, at least with my grandson. Will be waiting for the 3rd in the series ! ! !
