Turn Your Android Device into a Sound Studio

Create, play, and perform your own music with the SPC - Music Sketchpad, a dynamic synthesizer app for your Android device. Play or program audio loops and sequences, then produce, record, and share your live tracks anytime and anywhere. Accomplished and aspiring musicians alike will enjoy this robust creative tool.

Customize Loops and Sequences

When you open this app, the Sketchpad introduces the audio "scene": a 16-pad multi-touch enabled screen that lets you play loops and sequences. While you play, the pads light up rhythmically, making it easier to create music instinctively.

Upload and manipulate your own loops or use the ones provided in the "scenes". Program your own sequences by setting steps and notes. You can produce, record, and share live tracks anytime, anywhere. If you already use mikrosonic's popular app RD3: Groovebox, loops you've created there can also be worked into your music instantly.

SPC - Music Sketchpad features multi-touch control, sample/loop load in .wav format up to 24 bit 96 kHz, recording of performances in exportable WAV format, and direct integration of RD3: Groovebox loops. This app comes with two pre-programmed scenes, and there are additional scenes available at the mikrosonic website. Naturally, there is file sharing capability.

3.0 out of 5 stars complex and well programmed, but for who? September 11, 2011
Verified Purchase
As a regular user of Reason and the old Acid programs, I was surprised by the amount of manipulation possible in this program, as well as a clean and somewhat complex interface. You can alter your loops using keys, a pad, and even waveform.

However, I'm not sure who this app is for. A musician is going to immediately turned off by the techno loops and the obvious limit of trying to program on a phone or tablet, and someone who has not had experience with similar software will have no idea what to do. So I can upload my own sounds, fine. At the point that I am creating and uploading my own stuff, though, wouldn't I just do it on a fully functional computer? I don't see the touchscreen interface as being a likely replacement for the precise control of a mouse, which will be necessary if you are attempting to line up or trim tracks.

If a kid with no musical exposure downloads this and likes it, perhaps he/she will move onto something more productive, having learned a bit from this program. I don't see an actual musician with experience with other programs getting any use out of this.

If you have the Android horsepower to run Sketchpad (My Android Tablet is running Android 2.2, with a 9.7 inch screen with 1024×768 resolution, and a 1GHz Cortex A8 CPU), this is a fine music application. I actually can't see doing much with this on a smaller screen and suspect this is much more attractive as a tablet application. This is something that requires frequent use of "fingers on the screen" so Sketchpad is something that will definitely pile up the fingerprints on your screen fairly fast. I've become a regular purchaser of wet/dry screen wipes (these, for example - handy hint: cut them in half and throw them in a ziploc baggy since you can probably get 4 or 5 cleanings of a tablet per each set of wet/dry wipes);

I originally purchased one of Mikrosonic's other products, RD3 Groovebox, primarily based on a number of positive reviews for that app. At the time, I was looking for some inexpensive apps to test my new tablet's capabilities. Groovebox is something you can use to create some (admittedly standard) 1970's and 1980's synthesizer loops (think Kraftwerk). That led me to looking in to, and now purchasing, this app, the SPC Music Sketchpad. Everything is "pretty much" working as advertised, and if you are somewhat familiar with creating and manipulating music loops, this has a pretty short learning curve. Most of my chops were furthered by using Sony's Acid Music on a PC.

Since Groovebox and Sketchpad are made by the same company, they are advertised to work together, i.e., if you save a loop in Groovebox (actually, "export") it's supposed to be available in an RD3 folder that Sketchpad can see.

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally, a decent music app September 11, 2011

I must confess, ive recently bought an iPad 2 and have been neglecting my Thunderbolt and Transformer while I play with apps like Garage Band and more recently dJay, fantastic apps to create and mix yours and others music, I was just thinking of looking for an app like this, to provide some basic foundations for my new hobby and with a nice (albeit small) selection of loops and samples.

After playing with it for a bit on my Transformer (using external speakers) I've found this to be quite useful, especially outputting to wav which I can manipulate how I wishand even put it into my other apps.

There seems to be more to this available via in app purchases (for 9.99 but hey, I paid $19.99 for dj.) My only issue is thats its not responsive enough at times, but I think that has more to do with Android than the app, and it seems a bit basic (although the manual show many functions, I havent been through them all yet).

All in all, its called music sketchpad which for sketching out a framework for a song, its actually very good. But be warned, if your not so much into electronic music or hiphop, it may not be for you. It is fun to play around with, now if I could just hook my Transformer, iPad, and sound system together, Id be set.

2.0 out of 5 stars A musician's thoughts September 12, 2011

This is a basic, simplistic app with little flexibility and little value. I did not find it usable for serious music making or casual melody tinkering.

5.0 out of 5 stars best mobile music program i've seen November 11, 2012
Verified Purchase
So, this app is not for everybody, and it has crashed once or twice. It does not replace a mixing studio or some of the better computer based programs for a pro, and if you have never done any music editing before it may seem overly complex. Even so, it's undeniably 5 stars, and I say give it a chance.

As for how complex it is, my six year old opened up the program and was having an impromptu dance party inside of one minute. It actually sounded pretty good. So despite the overwhelming appearance for the uninitiated, just jump in and you'll find that it's not so bad.

It is very, very easy to get started and the program is well laid out. Just press a couple of buttons at random and the music starts. Turn on or off the different instruments until you find a combination you like.

It's slightly more complex to move on from there, but that is only because of the wide variety of options you can tweak. The good news is, you're making music all the time, so even those without prior experience will have fun exploring if they keep an open mind. If you don't explore much, this is probably not worth the price of admission because the default loops are really only good, not great.

As someone who has messed around with sampling/looping/mixing in the past, I must say for a mobile solution I am extraordinarily impressed with the power and flexibility of this app. It's a lot more useful and easier to use than some of the outrageously expensive drum machines I bought a decade ago, and it is on par with some synthesizers for exploring sound concepts once you get it tweaked to your personal taste. I really like the easy to use interface for changing time/meter/rhythm and inserting loops in an easy to visualize array of fractional beats. It's not perfect, but it's easy enough to make a good tune; you can certainly have fun with it or even make a complete song or album if you're motivated.

Download and looked great on my ASUS tablet. Game play was boring and uninteresting. I suppose it is personal preference, not the game for me.

No tutorial as with many other apps offered. There should be no reason for a person to wonder how to use an app.
