any suggestions for a reliable printer that is economical with ink?

For monochrome, Brother's simpler lasers can be thrifty. For color inkjets, depending on how many flyers and handouts you plan, Canon used to be the thrifty choice for small scale use when they had separate color tanks that could easily be refilled. We'll keep ours printing as long as we can. Canon engineers were evidently directed to fix this bean-counters' problem, just like Epson and HP engineers had been directed by their employers earlier.
