Product Description

SPM393-SI uses market-proven Multi-port Serial ATA PHY technology and a proprietary storage processor to provide very highly efficient SATA RAID operations.

With an easy configuration scheme, the device can function as a pure port multiplier which provides SATA port expansion just like a SATA Hub, a hard drive performance booster which provides a high-performance device seen by the host controller, or a hard drive data protector which automatically backs up data to prevent data loss from hard drive damage.

SPM393-SI also has an advanced mode to provide both the benefits of performance boost and data protection.

SPM393-SI has a self-contained storage processor chip which completely frees up the main CPU loading and whose SATA ports comply with SATA II specification, making it suitable for use in both internal system and external storage applications

The initialization time for the RAID 5 config was almost instant.

It does not include a large to small Molex adapter, but my PS had a free small Molex I could use.
Peter
Their software raid manager also works perfectly and recognizes my other array.

Very satisfied with this product. Using on FreeNAS 7 with 5 2TB drives RAID5. Shows up as 1 drive 7,630,720MB to OS. Easy setup, excellent tech support. Instructions could be modified to instruct user to hold the button during power on for 15 seconds to initialize an array. For $100 more, the next card up (spm394) is worth it to step up in features over the long run.

Although this device has an option to set the RAID by rotating a switch. I used the software option buy switching the jumper. Then download JMicron software and it was the easiest setup I've ever had to do for a RAID.

If you are going to use software here are the steps.
1. Set the Jumper to manual (On the picture its the tall black jumper on the back) (Instruction are included for this)
2. Plugin the drives that you are going to use and attach power cable.
3. Bootup the computer
--- At this point you will only see 1 Drive (Don't panic)
4. Download the software directly from the manufacturer, visit DATOptic Inc website and search by product if the link below is removed.
[...]
--- Software is in the Support Tab
6. Install and run, the drives will be detected with the GUI
7. Select the type of RAID you want and add the drives.
8. Wait 15-30sec and it will create a volume.
9. Go to Disk Management and you will see an unallocated volume
10. Create a new volume, if it a large volume it will be GPT
11. Done.

The primary use of the Home Server is to have a local backup for my Windows 7 systems. With each of those having 3TB drives I needed a good setup for RAID but was somewhat limited with the expansion options of the Atom board. I had initially did a software raid with bad consequences after having to perform an OS reinstall.

The initialization time for the RAID 5 config was almost instant. With this device you need not worry about the PCI bus speed (which was awful with software RAID). You only need power (for which a molex cable is provided) and one open sata port. I got this device in February; and have had no issues with this hardware since. You can get a PCI mounting bracket direct from the vendor to mount the device if you have an available slot.

My setup consists of:

- ARK ITX/CS-CI03 Black Mini ITX Server case
- Intel Atom D2700 ITX Motherboard with CPU
- 4 GB RAM
- 2.5" 500GB OS Boot Drive
- 4 Western Digital 3TB RED Drives
- Windows Home Server 2011
- CrashPlan+ Family Edition

Works exactly as described and I ordered another. The only issue is the lack of mounting options, it doesn't come with anything to mount it in a 3.5" bay or anywhere else. I'm going to wind up using a project box mounted inside the case since the controls shouldn't have to be accessed often.
