powerpuck
myFC PowerTrekk provides instant power anytime, anywhere (see larger image).

myFC PowerTrekk is the first portable fuel cell charger that runs on ordinary water. By using advanced fuel cell technology to convert hydrogen gas into electricity, myFC PowerTrekk can directly charge mobile phones and other USB-compatible electronic devices such as digital cameras and GPS units. The hybrid myFC PowerTrekk can also store electricity in its efficient, rechargeable lithium-ion battery until you need it.

How it Works

The fuel cell inside the myFC PowerTrekk is a completely passive system. Without fans or pumps, the fuel cell silently converts hydrogen into electricity via its Proton Exchange Membrane. To power the fuel cell with hydrogen, simply add water to one side of the device and a myFC PowerTrekk Puck cartridge to the other side. PowerTrekk Pucks are composed of a non-toxic solution containing 5 grams of sodium silicide.

Water reacts with sodium silicide to produce heat and an inert mineral called sodium silicate. Hydrogen from the water is unused in this process and is released for consumption by the fuel cell. The chemistry of the process is safe and the only bi-product from the fuel cell is a little water vapor. Expended PowerTrekk Pucks can be recycled as metal waste.

Advantages

Unlike solar-powered chargers, a fuel cell generates energy instantly and is not impacted by weather or solar position -- it charges day or night, rain or shine. Unlike AA batteries, myFC PowerTrekk can deliver up to 1 Amp of continuous power to get your device charged quickly. In fact, myFC PowerTrekk charges USB standard devices at virtually the same rate as plugging in your device to an electrical wall outlet at home. myFC PowerTrekk is compact enough for travel, outdoor adventures off the grid, or stashing away at home for emergency situations.

Versatility

The hybrid myFC PowerTrekk also provides the option to travel with just the smaller, lithium battery contained in the lid of the device. The battery can be initially charged by an outlet, a computer via USB, or by the internal fuel cell. This versatility makes myFC PowerTrekk an excellent charger for a variety of scenarios where you may not be able to rely upon the grid. myFC PowerTrekk and PowerTrekk Puck meet industry security standards and are approved to be carried aboard commercial airlines.

Waste by-product: nine pucks.

Lots of big cellphones need 1A (1,000ma), and this device only produces one half of an amp (500ma), so it can't power them to use only slow recharge.

Devices like these, even though fancy and impressive in terms of what the human brain can figure out, are not helping our situation.

Cool technology, but it's not a very good application of it. The cost of use is insane and with all that consumable product, it's not very "green", certainly having a rechargeable Li-Ion battery is a lot greener. This device also doesn't produce enough amps for a lot of small devices out there. Most tablets require 2A (2,000ma) current to recharge and operate. Lots of big cellphones need 1A (1,000ma), and this device only produces one half of an amp (500ma), so it can't power them to use only slow recharge.

Not environmentally friendly. The pucks are disposable (yes, recyclable at an unspecified future date) and non-reusable. Also not cheap, it just doesn't make sense.

Going on a trip? 10800mAh can recharge an iPhone 5 three times.

To get that with a reusable battery, charge the battery before your trip, total cost, €50. Waste by-product, nothing for the life of the battery. Take it home and use it on your next trip. Carry with you: one battery.

Cost for 10 trips: €50.

To get that with PowerTrekk, buy the PowerTrekk plus 9 pucks. Total cost: €219. If you use a lot of pucks you can buy them for as cheap (!) as €5.3 each for future trips. Maximum price per 10800mAh: $219, minimum price per 10800mAh on future trips: €47.7. Waste by-product: nine pucks. Carry with you: one unit that's already larger than the 10800mAh battery, and eight unused or used pucks (assuming you're hiking and carrying out).

Minimum cost for 10 trips: €477. (!!!!!!!)

Again... it just doesn't make sense.

The only way to make this work is to figure out a way to make it work with refillable, reusable pucks and a cheap and safe chemical catalyst, or with catalyst technology that's at least smaller and much cheaper.

I don't get it - this item costs $200 and $6 or so per 1500mAh use -
I would rather buy and use up to 4 of these other Anker® units @ $50 each - B00CEZBKTO - and each full charge provides up to 6 times the power of each $6 puck so I only have and need one $50 USB rechargeable unit to replace this "Fuel Cell" powered unit -

The charger has no problem charging my GoPro cameras, but turns off whenever I try to charge my Samsung Galaxy S4 smartphone.
