There isn't much of a style to the drumming on that song. Aside from a couple snare rolls it is basically just (whoever) a straight beat riding the ride cymbal throughout. Nothing spectacular but fitting for the tune. I read an article where Macca said he would have the band learn the songs and possibly play them live. That's what leads me to believe it is all him...plus it all sounds like his playing.
Pete, I agree on all accounts. I like when he works with someone else behind the board. Sometimes when he is on his own there is no one to reel him in and say "no". :) I like the new song and hope it is a view of things to come. I hear people say his voice isn't as strong but the guy is 71! I remember seeing guys like Sinatra at that age and their voices weren't as good anymore. People forget Macca is playing an instrument live as well. Still ultra impressive.
Isn't it just great to be able to talk about it and know it's coming. I mean who the heck put's out an ENTIRE "New" cd at his age. Im so excited. I dont know of many or even anyone even older groups that still work together from back in the day, who is capable of so much, let alone putting put a brand new CD with all new songs that u wrote and composed, he never disappoints me......
I agree on the touring ...it takes a toll on anyone's voice especially if you're his age. Even when you hear interviews with him he sounds like he smokes 5 packs a day. I wish he'd do a solo tour and play acoustic and piano.
Yes...when he spoke during the interview on the "Magical Mystery" DVD, his voice sounded very ragged...but hey...still no where close to the level of Dylan. Love Dylan, but goodness, there's not much left.
I know! Not sure if you saw him on the Colbert Report but his voice was real ragged there as well. Yep, gotta love Dylan. Sometime in the early 90's his voice sounded like a kazoo...now it is just croaky. :)
Wow..."kazoo" is a very apt description". It would be one thing if McCartney was just doing stuff like "Let it Be" and "My Love", but to do Vocal shredding songs like "Helter Skelter", it will obviously take it's toll.
Thanks Chris...I had checked out his site and didn't notice anything that would give me that impression but perhaps I missed something. I think he had his band on Memory Almost Full for some of the tracks and did solo stuff as well.
I wrote to Happy Nat of Beatles Rarity (thebeatlesrarity.com) which is a very informative site. I asked him if he knew if this latest album was a band project or just Paul. He wrote back and said he spoke with Brian Ray and was told most of the tracks were a band project. So I guess there were a few that were just Paul.
Here's my question to the panel: What song comes to mind when you think of the last really youthful/powerful McCartney vocal, where he still has the pipes (along the lines of "I'm Down", "Beware My Love" or "Helter Skelter")? I have my answer but I'm curious to hear yours first!
