This review is from: nu Chemical Rhetoric (Audio CD)
I've been following this band since their first release (back in February 2002) and by the time they released their third, only a few months later, I knew these guys would (should!) be major someday. Fast-forward to 2005 and Merry's major debut album, after being signed to Victor Entertainment, doesn't disappoint. The musical style on "nu-Chemical Retoric" doesn't stray much from their previous albums ("Gendai Stoic", "Modern-Garde" and the best-of "Koseiha Blend Classic", all released while they were indies), it's perhaps a little more nostalgic and most songs lack the violent undertones of songs like "Hi no ataranai basho" or "Japanese Modernist". But do expect more great, epic tunes in the line of the band's unique blend of retro, melodic rock and jazz, skilfully performed and with lots of attitude. (If you're not familiar with the band, Marty Friedman, ex-Megadeth guitarist and a fan of the band, described Merry perfectly: "Amazing new band, totally fresh! (...) they are a cross between 1930's music, brutal thrash metal and Japanese pop. All played aggressively in a very visual style.")
This limited edition contains a DVD with two promotional videos and a making-of documentary (the price difference between this one and the standard edition isn't great, so I'd recommend getting this special version if you can). I'm quite glad to see this album on sale at Amazon.com (even if the import price might be a little steep). For what it's worth, this is my favorite rock band at the moment (and they have been for the past 2 years now)! With a back-catalog of indies releases that are out-of-print, sold-out and generally traded at outrageous colector's prices and with loads of sold-out concert venues, plenty of fans seem to agree with this!
