Product Description

An exciting new series of study guides that lets each student design a course of study pitched to his or her individual needs and learning style

Each year, more than one million U.S. high school students take one or more advanced placement (AP) exams, and, according to official projections, that number will continue to rise in the years ahead. That is because AP exams confer important benefits on those who do well on them. High AP scores are indispensable to gaining admission to most elite colleges. They provide students with a competitive edge when competing for grants and scholarships. And they allow students to bypass required university survey courses, saving on skyrocketing tuition fees.

Designed to coincide perfectly with the most current
AP exams, Five Steps to a 5 on the Advanced Placement Examinations guides contain several advanced features that set them above all competitors. Each guide is structured around an ingenious Five-Step Plan. The first step is to develop a study plan, the second builds knowledge, the third and fourth hone test-taking skills and strategies, and the fifth fosters the confidence students need to ace the tests. This flexible study tool is also tailored to three types of students. For the more structured student there is a "Month-by-Month" approach that follows the school year and a "Calendar Countdown" approach that begins with the new year. For students who leave studying to the last minute "Basic Training" covers the basics in just four weeks.

Other outstanding features include:

  • Sample tests that closely simulate real exams
  • Review material based on the contents of the most recent tests
  • Icons highlighting important facts, vocabulary, and frequently-asked questions
  • Boxed quotes offering advice from students who have aced the exams and from AP teachers and college professors
  • Websites and links to valuable online test resources, along with author e-mail addresses for students with follow-up questions
  • Authors who are either AP course instructors or exam developers

A Perfect Plan for the Perfect Score!

5 reasons to make this your guide to acing the AP Calculus exam:

  1. Only the McGraw-Hill 5 Steps to a 5 examination series helps you to design a course of study tailored to your unique needs and learning style.
  2. Each innovative guide is structured around a helpful, easy-to-follow Five-Step Plan:
Step 1: Develop the Study Plan
    Step 2: Develop the Knowledge
    Step 3: Develop the Skills
    Step 4: Develop the Strategies
    Step 5: Develop the Confidence
  3. This flexible study tool is also tailored to three types of students. For students who work well on a timeline, there is a "Month-by-Month" approach that follows the school year and a "Calendar Countdown" approach that begins with the New Year. For students who do their best under the gun, the "Basic Training" option covers the AP basics in just four weeks.
  4. A Diagnostic / Master Exam will help you pinpoint your strengths and weaknesses while providing you with powerful insights into the structure of the test itself.
  5. Finally, a Comprehensive Review, covers pre-calculus through definite integrals and includes review questions, end-of-chapter practice problems with diagrams, and quick-review summaries.

And if that's not enough, here are 5 more great reasons to choose this guide over all the other AP Calculus test prep books:

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent review!, May 15, 2002
By Vikram Viswanathan (New Hyde Park, NY) - See all my reviews
This book is excellent not only as a pre-AP review but also as a way of keeping up with the Calculus material throughout the year. Every chapter reviews the concepts and includes many different types of sample problems to prepare you for whatever problem you may get on the AP. If you feel as if you don't know a certain topic, using this book to go through that chapter is extremely helpful, so this doesn't need to be used only for review a week before the AP. The extra problems in each chapter provide valuable practice on each topic. In addition, the book contains helpful lists of formulas and equations so you don't need to go back through every unit to find all of them. Finally, this review contains several practice exams so that you can test yourself before the real exam, and the exam problems are very similar to those that actually appear on the real AP.

This book is definitely extremely helpful, both as supplementary review during the year and as review before the AP exam.

1.0 out of 5 stars Should be called "1 Step to a 1", October 28, 2004
Avoid this review book. I am a teacher of Calculus, and I am going to teach AP Calculus next year. Unlike most students who need to review, I already know the material 100%. I was SHOCKED by the amount of errors and misprints that are in this book. If you are a student who doesn't know Calculus that well, you are going to think that YOU are the one making errors, but it is the book that is wrong. I contacted the publisher, and they have yet to give me a decent response. I feel this book should be pulled from the shelves. They should title it "1 Step to a 1", and the one step is to buy this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars 5 Stars - same as my AP score, April 12, 2004
By whizkid2000 "whizkid2000" (San Antonio, TX USA) - See all my reviews
I got a 5 on the AP Calculus AB exam due in large measure to this book. A couple of weeks before the AP, I just worked my way through this book, and that was essentially my only preparation for the AP. I had a terrible calculus teacher, so I had to learn many of the AP topics entirely from this book. Particularly for volume and area problems, this book was utterly illuminating: I was incredibly confused by my teacher's fumbling presentation of the subject, but this book was all I needed to get me back on track. In fact, now that I'm in BC Calculus with the same teacher, I'm sorry that I gave this book away to a friend - 5 Steps to a 5 would certainly help on the simpler BC topics, as well!

I also purchased the Barron's book before taking the AP, which I didn't like nearly as much and spent very little time using. Barron's is much, much harder than the actual AP, which is frustrating, plus the actual instruction in Barron's is a lot more difficult to follow.

5 Steps to a 5 was all the preparation I needed for the AP, but you really need to go through the whole book to get the most out of it. It's some amount of work, but 5 Steps to a 5 easily guides you on the path to earn the top score on the AP.
