5.0 out of 5 stars Everything You Need On Learning Theories. Hands Down, August 14, 2006
By Reginald Williams (Denmark, SC United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Dr. Schunk's book pulls out all the stops for teaching theory. Any topic you need from social cognitive theory to classical conditioning to the more cognitively oriented perspectives can be found here. It possesses the best index that I have yet to see in a textbook of this caliber. You can find ANYTHING that you need!

I used this book in my master's training, and it is the perfect compliment for the ETS PRAXIS Test-Prep books for the PLT.

5.0 out of 5 stars Indispensable for educators, November 3, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
If you want to understand learning theories in order to apply them to professional practice in education, this textbook is indispensable. It is absolutely comprehensive in providing information about learning theories and the leading theorists and scientists behind them, while providing a wellspring of examples on how to apply theory to life in the classroom and beyond. Every new term and idea is presented along with useful strategies, which translate the theories well. The scientific experiments behind the theories are well presented, without being overwhelmingly technical, which is the problem I've found with other learning theory books. The text is organized by learning theories, rather than by scientist or by chronology, which makes for easier contemplation of the theory as a whole. An educator could open to any single page in this book and find useful, well-explained, research-based information to incorporate into their everyday practice. The only difficult thing about this book is that it is so thorough and example-rich that one cannot possibly digest the entire text in one semester. It's really a reference book that should be tackled slowly, and with care, in the way that the author appears to have written it. Schunk has a strong understanding how to help people learn, especially when it comes to how to clearly present written information.
I highly recommend this text--it is a great synthesis of the science of psychology and the practice of education. Anyone with an interest in fostering learning through education should read and frequently review its pages.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great reference text, November 26, 2008
By Dr. Diabolical (Kentucky USA) - See all my reviews
Great reference text. Good overview of instructional theories and other concepts related to curriculum decisions. Grateful to get an older edition at a bargain price; the underlying theories don't change as often as textbook publishers want to change the "wrappings."
