Product Description

Unrivaled diversity and ease of use have made THE HEATH ANTHOLOGY OF AMERICAN LITERATURE: VOLUME E: CONTEMPORARY PERIOD (1945 TO THE PRESENT), 6th Edition a best-selling text since 1989, when the first edition was published. In presenting a more inclusive canon of American literature, THE HEATH ANTHOLOGY OF AMERICAN LITERATURE: VOLUME E: CONTEMPORARY PERIOD (1945 TO THE PRESENT), 6th Edition continues to balance the traditional, leading names in American literature with lesser-known writers and to build upon the anthology's other strengths: its apparatus and its ancillaries. Available in five volumes for greater flexibility, the 6th Edition offers thematic clusters to stimulate classroom discussions and showcase the treatment of important topics across the genres. --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars A very good book!, November 13, 2007
By Carlos Francisco Monge (Heredia, Heredia Costa Rica) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This book is outstanding in its usefulness for becoming familiar with recent American literature.

Its appropriate selection of authors and works--along with its biographies, preliminary studies and clarifying notes--make this book a "must" for specialists, for scholars of contemporary literature, for students and for universities.

The present volume (the fifth in the collection) undoubtedly has the same advantages and characteristics of the previous volumes.

I have no hesitation in strongly recommending this anthology.

Carlos Francisco MONGE
Professor of Literature

2.0 out of 5 stars Had to get it for class, August 21, 2009
By M. Doyle "Ecteon" (Greensboro, NC United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Had to get this for class, otherwise I would have been fine with the Norton I already have in my possession. Other than at least one typo that I've found so far (in my first section of reading for class, pg. 419, first full paragraph, 3rd sentence, first word of sentence is spelled "Furhter", as opposed to "Further") the editors have been fine, and their varied perspectives intersting. However, this leads me to the next problem. For an anthology that reportedly prides itself on its multi-cultural base, it does a pitiful job of correctly reporting slavery in the Americas. It only mentions African and Native American slavery, and leaves all mention of the English practice of using political prisoners from Scotland, Wales, and Ireland as slave labor out of its pages.

The only other thing is that I had to find Volume A and Volume B, and Amazon does not have many readily available Volume B's, so this was full price at the University Bookstore.

4.0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Anthology of American Literature, June 29, 2006
This second volume of American Literature is quite excellent in it's editing and information. The writers read like a who's who of American fiction of over the last couple of centuries. The various writers, poets, authors, and others who have contributed whether it be a poem, a short story, or an essay is enormous. I had this book for American Literature II class in college. The writing in this book reflects America's taste for the various cultures, races, ethnicities, sexual preferences, backgrounds, histories, and tales of everything from identity to immigration to slavery, etc. The stories and poems in this anthology can only help us better understand America. I would give this a 5 but I think it should be a hardcover rather softcover because I got an overly used copy which fell apart in time but I would recommend this book for any high school language arts teacher and as a great library reference book.
