    I rate this item 3 stars because of the practice tests. I found that the best way to study for the AP English test is to do as many practice tests with as close to the same structure as the actual test as possible. The actual writing preceding the practice tests is just average. You probably know everything the author says before he says it. So that makes only half of this book worth anything.

    Granted, the reviewer below is rather unfair for giving this book 1 star because it "only got him a 3." The AP English tests are the most difficult by far out of all the AP's. I took the test and got a 4, because I did ALL the practice tests in this book, and in Cliffs. One of my friends, however, who got an 800 on SAT verbal and was expecting a 5 on this, "only" got a 3. Besides, if you buy this book and hate everything it stands for (but do the practice tests please), you're only out of 10 bucks. What is that? At some universities, the tuition for one course can greatly exceed $4000? This book will give you 4 practice tests, so practice hard and hope you get a score that is accepted by your institution.

    The book is pretty much useless. The one thing that will come in handy is its dictionary. The questions are badly written and confusing, and the answers don't actually vary very much. The reasons given for the answers tend to be little more than saying "The author implies -repeats multiple choice answer-"

    This is a must have for any students taking the AP English exam. It can work as a companion to the actual course, or can help students who are independently preparing for the AP exam while taking a regular English course.
