Product Description

A companion work to 1993's popular An Update on Adult Learning Theory, this issue provides the adult learning educator with the latest developments, significant research, and continuing scholarship in andragogy and self-directed learning. Exploring a variety of frameworks, including context-based learning, informal and incidental learning, somatic learning, and narrative learning; the authors analyze recent additions to well-established theories and discuss the potential impact of today's cutting-edge approaches. Revised models of theories introduced in the 1993 edition, such as women's learning and transformational learning, are updated with the results of burgeoning scholarship and empirical data gathered in the 1990s. Articles also introduce pioneering developments in adult learning research, including new understandings of the brain's relationship to mind and consciousness and the role of emotions, feelings, and the imagination in the learning process. As an assessment of adult learning theory today, this volume is an indispensable resource for adult learning educators committed to delivering a more effective practice in the classroom, in the workplace, or in the community.

This is the 89th volume of the quarterly journal New Directions for Adult and Continuing Education.

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting, June 3, 2005
This is a very brief book with some very interesting perspectives on adult learning,
This book can help one to understand how they learn and why they learn that way.
It discusses how women learn differently than men and how emotions play a role in how we learn. The theory I found most interesting was a part of Transformational Learning; The Four-Lens Approach- the first lens is "emancipatory education", next understand that knowledge is created through interpretations, third lens is to accept consensual validation and lastly you have to follow through with your vision.
It's a good read if you want to expand your mind on the adult learning theory.

5.0 out of 5 stars Massively expensive for a pretty lightweight book, October 7, 2008
$30 for 90 pages. The material is entertaining, but not very heavy duty. Look for the .pdf version. I found it in my college library's database.

2.0 out of 5 stars More like a pamphlet than a text for a Master's program, November 9, 2007
By Harleyman (Cyberspace) - See all my reviews
For $30, this "text book" is smaller than the IRS tax instructions and should be available for about 1/3 the cost if it is going to be used in academic instruction. It is not worth the cost nor is the information contained in it worthy of being considered a text for a course in the Masters program. All of the subjects in the book are found in free online articles.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not what I was looking for.
This book was very dry, and not really what I was looking for, so maybe that is why I didn't like it very much. Read more
