Editorial Reviews

Review

An absolutely must read for any church leader thinking about change. Pastor Ficken ... shares pointed research, personal anecdotes of his own journey, and practical processes, all spoken with a pastor s heart and a shepherd s sensitivity. It s wonderfully readable, and eminently spiritual. The final chapter that leads the reader through The Journey of Old Church is a masterful guide to change and a compelling invitation to begin the adventure for oneself. Rev. William Ameiss President, Northern Illinois District Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod --Rev. William Ameiss

Leadership and Change: the two greatest areas of challenge for church leaders today. Ficken has done a remarkable service for today s church leaders by addressing both of these topics in one well-written book. It breathes authenticity. It inspires hope. I would recommend it to all pastors and lay leaders.... Gerald W. Seaman Executive Director for Outreach The Florida-Georgia District Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod --Gerald W. Seaman

This is a solid book for change leaders in congregations. Jock ties scriptural principles and illustrations to current cases and a variety of congregations. He illustrates the concepts, frameworks and the path to the future for many church leadership teams who find themselves stuck at their present level of ministry but desire to go further. Dave Travis Director of Church Champions Network --Dave Travis

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book on church leadership, April 21, 2006
By Matthew Gunia (Justice, Illinois) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Jock Ficken is the pastor of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Aurora, Illinois; he has written "Change" to educate parish pastors about and assist them through the long, slow, and often painful (yet still exciting) process of change.

In many ways, this book is a "capstone" book as it touches on many specialized issues within the study of congregational dynamics and behavior but even while he draws upon these areas of study, he neither gives them short-shrift nor does he "go over the reader's head" by assuming he has an extensive background in the subject-he's both thorough and balanced. Indeed, a thorough knowledge of these subjects is not required as Ficken adequately explains each, but only insofar as it advances the flow of the book and its major arguments; he is careful not to bog down the reader with excessive superfluous details. This reader appreciated the multiple angles from which Ficken examines congregational change, the highly readable narrative, and the tendency of the book to whet the reader's appetite for further study in the subject.

The highlight of the chapter is its final chapter, "The Journey of Old Church," in which Ficken crafts a fictional story in which a newly called pastor, spends many years trying to turn an aging, declining, "living in the past" congregation into a more dynamic, mission-oriented, forward-looking congregation. This chapter ties all of the concepts of the book together and shows how they play out in "real life."

There are few aspects of this book that I find weak, but they do exist. One is the relatively poor quality of the art, graphs, and charts within the book-technology exists that could really clean them up and make them more visually appealing, but their current state appears unprofessional. The second weakness of the book revolves around Ficken's frequent examples: they are all aging, declining churches in a major suburb of about 100,000, with a growing Hispanic population (just like Aurora, Illinois). More diversity in the books examples would have been appreciated so that they might resonate with a wider readership.

And speaking of readership, "Change" deserves a wide readership. It is a well-researched, well-written, thorough and pastoral book on creating future-oriented change. Highly recommended.
