Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) and urinary incontinence are two common chronic ailments traditionally thought to be incurable. While neither is life-threatening and neither is being heroically researched and reported upon, these afflictions cause great personal distress to millions of people. For the first time, two strong self-help books offer cogent medical information and comprehensive action plans to IBS or incontinence sufferers. Staying Dry , a workbook (unfortunately padded with unnecessary forms) based on successful programs developed at Johns Hopkins, is very practical and encouraging. The Wellness Book of IBS is also specific and practical. Extensive and invasive tests for IBS are unnecessary, say the authors; diagnosis can be established by careful history and physical examination. Individual diet regulation is advised, and the book concludes with 50 recipes for IBS comfort. Both books are highly recommended.
