5.0 out of 5 stars August Ragon's Masterpiece on Japanese Monsters, December 17, 2007
By J. Mardis (Kentucky) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
For the simple fact that this is the first comprehensive, high quality, coffee-table-style book printed in English, for longtime fans of ULTRAMAN, August Ragone's book EIJI TSUBURAYA: MASTER OF MONSTERS is a dream come true. I consider myself a "longtime" fan of ULTRAMAN even though I had completely forgotten about the show until 2004 when I came across ULTRAMAN TIGA here on Amazon.com. Not knowing better, and thinking TIGA was the original ULTRAMAN I quickly bought TIGA volumes 1 & 2. The purchase was not in vain however, ULTRAMAN TIGA reawakened my childhood love of the original ULTRAMAN and introduced me to the whole world of the ULTRA SERIES that I'd missed for the past 30-some years. If you're a big fan of japanese tokusatsu programs (special effects shows) then EIJI TSUBURAYA: MASTER OF MONSTERS is a must-buy for your library. ET:MOM chronicles the life and work of Japan's premier special effects master Eiji Tsuburaya, the father and creator of Gojira (Godzilla) and Urutoraman (Ultraman) and a host of other japanese sci-fi monsters and films. ET:MOM is also a great source of inspiration for graphic artists and designers being chock-full of colorful retro monsters and space creatures accompanied with an excellent book layout. Here's to hoping that Mr. Ragone publishes other high quality english kaiju titles in the future. I'd love to see an illusrated guide to the ULTRAMAN universe or a guide to tokusatsu/henshin hero shows in general. A must-buy for all Ultraman and Godzilla fans! AAA+++ Highly Recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars Informative& Interesting about the creator of Ultraman, December 2, 2007
This is one of those gem of a book that crosses genres. August Ragone shows us behind he scenes of the man who created Godzilla and Ultraman. Well written at a level anyone can enjoy, and with a host of never seen before pictures (at least in America) of the behind the scenes making of these icons makes this a great read. Lots of information not readily known outside of Japan. Can't wait for volume 2!

Phenomenal book. Great quality, design, and content. If you have any remote appreciation for this kind of film making and monster design, this book is an absolute love letter... A must have!
