Recent studies by organizations as diverse as the outplacement firm Drake Beam Morin and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers report that age discrimination in the workplace has been much less prevalent in our booming economy. On the other hand, Gregory, an attorney with 35 years of experience specializing in employment discrimination, warns that prejudice against older workers has not disappeared and suggests that it can only increase as we face a more uncertain economic future and as Americans over 50 constitute an increasing percentage of the workforce. Gregory addresses the various ways older workers are stereotyped and shows how discrimination is manifested in reductions in force, early retirement programs, hiring, promotions, demotions, and transfers. He then clearly and thoroughly details the steps involved in filing and substantiating a claim of discrimination and outlines the range of possible remedies. The author concludes with recommendations for changes in the Age Discrimination in Employment Act of 1967 and its enforcement. David Rouse
