Several articles in the popular press have declared the 1990s and beyond as the "Age of the Smart Machine." This volume takes the reader to the capital of the smart machine revolutionthe so-called robot kingdom of Japan. But more is discussed here than the much-heralded robotic systems of Japanese manufacturing. Schodt also deals with the history and sociology of robotics and its role in Japanese culture and recreation. Particularly fascinating is Chapter 10, which suggests that Japan's rush to embrace robot technology may have quasi-religious roots. Profusely illustrated with photographs, this volume is neither a robotics handbook nor a futuristic speculation about the long-range impact of robots on society. Rather, it is a journalistic review, based on extensive interviews with engineers, business leaders, government officials, and academics about how robotics has woven its way into Japanese life.
