Product Description

Just five days before Election Tuesday, the nation learns of Charles Dewitt Heubner’s assassination. As the charismatic leader of the Church of Divine Destiny, a neo-Nazi group, Heubner had created and nurtured a culture of intolerance toward Blacks, Hispanics, Jews and homosexuals, leaving a trail of blood in its wake. His election to the presidency was to be the crowning achievement of a vicious career. Violence begets violence and more blood is spilled before the awful truth is discovered.

At the core of Because They Were lies a sense of family and of national unity -- a sense that all Americans are relatives, connected by the bonds of blood and brotherhood.

This timely and captivating tale of love, of hate and of family unity, bound together by imaginative prose and real-life dialogue, will bring the reader closer to his/her own roots. All the characters are as real as life itself. The reader will love some and hate others…but will forget none of them.

About the Author

Frank Cáceres, a native of New York City, holds a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from Manhattan College and a Master of Arts in Vocational Education from the University of South Florida. He has had a number of short stories and essays published in various journals, magazines and anthologies.

Frank and his lovely wife, Magali, make the daily commute to Tampa, Florida, looking forward to returning to their home in Zephyrhills. There, they escape city noises and enjoy the sights and sounds of birds, raccoons, rabbits, and the occasional alligator…a far cry from The Big Apple.

Frank’s parents were born in Puerto Rico, as was Magali, and they have each smelled the foul odor of prejudice. His personal experiences have laid the groundwork for this novel.

5.0 out of 5 stars A splendid and timely novel......, December 16, 2002
This review is from: Because They Were (Hardcover)
The author manages to effortlessly take us ahead twenty-six years to 2028. With his skillful prose, he allows the reader to participate in four terror-filled days. His characters are believable, the dialogue straight-forward and the message moving.
As an RN, I was very pleased to see the author's references to medical situations were authentic. He did his research, thereby adding to his skill as an author.
Caceres has something to say and does a superb job of it via his powerful debut novel. Through vibrant characters he weaves a story of love, hate, heritage and redemption.
This moving and majestic novel is highly recommended and this reader is anxiously anticipating further novels by Caceres.
Do yourself a favor . . . find a comfortable spot and join the Colon family as they encounter love, fear, truth and acknowledgement.
Their story is meaningful and will stay with you long after you read the final page.
A brilliant novel by a skilled author . . . Because He His.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, February 8, 2003
The political and racial issues are as true as they can be. Don't be mistaken, this is not a novel about minorities being victimized. The plot is an eye opener to the truth about good and bad people, no matter the race, political and/or social status. Who we are today is a direct result of the way we were raised, no matter our place or condition of origin. As Puerto Rico native, I felt extremely identified with the plot. As a member of a close-knit family, I really loved the book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Because They Were, January 15, 2003
By Sol Escalante (Avon, Ohio USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Because They Were (Hardcover)
I enjoyed the book very much because it was fast paced and the characters were so real that it was easy to love them or hate them. I really appreciated the sense of family and how they took care of each other and believed in one another. The "bad guys" were extremely realistic and the evil deeds they committed were not new and have already taken place in our world. It was a very scary scenario but one that would hopefully make you stop and think and realize that we're all in this together and we need each other. I'm looking forward to another book that continues the saga of this wonderful family. Please don't let us down Mr. Caceres
