Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal
Grade 10 Up–As a motif of horror fiction, subways have certainly been explored before, but this combination of manga and underground terror is sure to win fans. It seems that the Tokyo subway is more than just a bustling urban transport system; it's also the lair of ghosts and other gruesome beasties. In a series of self-contained short stories, different characters encounter the restless spirits that lurk in the subterranean tunnels: a dancer is pursued by the ghost of a former rival, some teenage pimps must face the shocking results of their actions, and so on. Throughout the stories, a spectral young man named Seiya appears, guiding the living and the dead with his understanding of the underworld. The art is dramatic and evocative but the gory images make this title for older teens.–Douglas P. Davey, Halton Hills Public Library, Ontario, Canada

Product Description
What lies below Tokyo's subway system is more frightening than you could have ever imagined...in its subways there exists a boundary between this world and the next--the land of the dead, and the mysterious young man Seiya is its guide. In this collection of bone-chilling shorts, follow the twisted tales of death and hauntings that inhabit this horrifying underworld, where innocent youth fall victim to the ghosts who inhabit Tokyo's underground.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good new horror manga, April 9, 2008
Being a big fan of horror anything, Dark Metro was a nice surprise. There are five one-shot stories centering around a central character (Who is NOT on the front cover weird). The set-up is very similar to Mail if you have read it.

The plot for each story is similar and yet different enough to keep you entertained. As the summary shows the central idea is that the subway at night is inhabited by the dead. The art is wonderful. In short, this is horror manga art. Wonderfully grotesque, violent and bloody (Veeery bloody). The other great aspect of this work is that the author does not rely upon panty shots when female characters are being chased. The focus is actually on the zombie-like creatures!

For a first volume it is a good start. The last one-shot in this series actually begins to touch on the main character and give us some background. I look forward to the second volume to see if the pace can be kept.

In short, it is a great new horror read. The horror art is fantastic. The writing is brief but carries the read along for the ride.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cool and creepy!, February 24, 2008
By Not2old4boytoys (Seattle, WA) - See all my reviews
I don't generally like horror stories to begin with. In fact, I normally close my eyes at the gory stuff on CSI (on TV), and I always turn away when the creepy, "You're gonna get it now" music comes on screen at the movies, indicating that somebody is going to bite it soon. However, I really enjoyed the short stories here. Thoughtful, and with a moral, I actually couldn't put it down. Yeah, some of the pictures are pretty icky, but overall, the whole thing was well written, well illustrated, and well worth reading. I actually can't wait to see the next one!
