Editorial Reviews

Product Description

The authors have summarized the natural history and captive maintenance of all species of snakes found in the United States and Canada. They have spent years studying the captive maintenance of over 90% of these species and have researched the literature to provide a summary of natural history for each of the species discussed. Recent literature regarding the captive maintenance and propagation of many snakes is presented. The tremendous amount of detailed information makes this book unique. Convenient and easy to read, the book has over 200 color photographs and an extensive bibliography. It is an essential reference for zookeepers, herpetoculturists, libraries, and veterinary clinics that treat North American snakes.

5.0 out of 5 stars great book at any level, November 12, 2008
my vet had recommended this book and I curse my finances for having waited so long to get it - it's even better than I anticipated
first of all, the book covers all North American snakes - not just the popular ones, so there's info that is difficult to find elsewhere
there's more information on some of the snakes, than is to be found in literature dedicated to that species
the husbandry information is detailed and based on experience
I also like that they have little summaries of basic info at the end of each species and they give you a maintenance difficulty level rating
it's well written, so the info is very accessible
don't wait as long as I did - there are several smaller books (like the one on hognoses) I might not even have bothered with, had I had this one first

5.0 out of 5 stars For novice snake-handlers and experienced snake-keepers, October 18, 2003
By Midwest Book Review (Oregon, WI USA) - See all my reviews
Snakes Of The United States And Canada: Natural History And Care In Captivity by small animal/exotic animal veterinarian John V. Rossi and natural curator and snake expert Roxanne Rossi is an in-depth, 576-page informational resource concerning the housing, care, environmental regulation, feeding, breeding, handling and just about everything else necessary to taking appropriate care of captive snakes native to the United States and Canada. Color photographs and species-specific information complement and enhance the general husbandry instructions in this exhaustive and very strongly recommended resource for novice snake-handlers and experienced snake-keepers.
